DUPLEX PUMPING-ENGINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,335, dated September 6, 1904. Application filed May 29, 1903. Serial No. 159,238. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, STERLING H. BUNNELL,
certain new and useful Improvements in Duplex Pumping-Engines, whereof the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompany ngdrawings.
My-improvements relate to valve mechanism for engines comprising a plurality of cylinders, and particularly for duplex pumpingengines whose cylinders are arranged'in tandem relation. Insuchengines it is usual to independently control the several sets of cylinder-valves byconnecting them with respectively independent actuating devices mounted upon a crank-shaft which is connected in common to the pistons of theseveral cylindersthat is to say, the steammotor-valves are op- .eratively connected with one set of eccentrics,

To illustrate my invention, I have chosen a duplex gas-compressor whose steam motorcylinders are provided with main slide-valves and auxiliary cut-ofi slide-valves and whose pump-cylinders areprovided with positivelyactuated rotary valves. As ordinarily'constructed a pumpingc'ngine of this type comprises three eccentrics for each of the duplicate sets of cylinders to effect the operation of the several sets of valves-that is to say, one eccentric is required to operate the main steam motor-valve, one tooperate the auxiliary steam-cut-ofl valves, and one to actuate the pump-valves. The application of my inventionto an engine of this type is advantageous in that it eliminates two of said ordinary eccentrics and parts connected therewith and effects the required movement of the several valves aforesaid from two eccentrics for each duplicate set of mechanism, the pump-- valves being operatively connected with the auxiliary cut-off valves, so as to be operated 5 ivalve'mechanism and the various novel features of construction and arrangement herein after more partlcularly specified and claimed.

in tandem relation'with the respective pumpcylinders 8 and 9,'and the pistons of 'said motor and pump cylinders are directly coupled bythepiston rodslO and 11, which are provided with cross-heads 12 and 13, arranged to reciprocate in the guides 14 and 15,'and are operatively connected by the rods 17 and 18 with the respective cranks 19 and 20 on the common crankshaft 21. Said shaft 21 is mounted in the bearings 22 and 23, respectively local to the duplicate sets of mechanisms aforesaid, and is provided with the fly-wheel 24 intermediate of said bearings. Said crank-shaft 21isprovided upon one end with eccentrics 25 26, which control the steam-valves in the motorcylinder 5 and the gas-valves in the pumpcylinder 9 by connections hereinafter de- The opposite end of said crank-shaft 21 is provided with similar eccentrics28 and 29, which control the operation of the steamvalves in the motor-cylinder 6 and the gasvalves in the pump-cylinder 8 by connections hereinafter described.
Said eccentric 25 is connected by the rod with the arm 36 on the outer end of the sleeve 37, which is mounted to rock upon the stud-shaft 38, projecting from the cross-head guide 1 1. The inner end of said'sleeve- 37 is provided with the arm 39, connected by the link with the stem 41 of the main steamvalve 42 of the motor-cylinder 5. (Shown in detail in Fig. IV.) The eccentric 26 is connected by the pitman 45 with the arm 46 on the rock-sleeve 47, and the latter is pivotally attached to the valve-rod 48, which extends through the valve-chest 50 of said motor-cylinder 5 and is connected at its opposite end with the arm 51 on the rock-shaft 52, which is supported in the bearings 53 55 on the respective pump-cylinders 8 and 9. Said rockshaft 52 is provided with the double rockerarm 58, adjoining the pump-cylinder 9, and is operatively connected by the links 59 and 60 with the arms 62 and 63, which latter are directly connected with the gas-valves within said cylinder 9. The eccentric 28 is connected by the pitman 65 with the arm 66 on the outer end of the sleeve 67, which latter is mounted to rock upon the stud-shaft 69, projecting from the cross-head guide 15. The inner end of said sleeve 67 is provided with the arm 71,
connected by the link 7 2 with the stem 7 3 of the main steam-Valve of the motor-cylinder 6, which valve is not shown, but is similar to the main steam-valve 42 of the other motorcylinder 6. The eccentric 29 is connected by the pitman 7 5 with the arm 76 on the rocksleeve 77, to which is pivotally attached the valve-rod 80, which extends through the valvechest 81 of the cylinder 6 and is connected at its opposite end with the arm 82 upon the rock-shaft 83. Said shaft 83 is mounted in the bearings 53 55 and is provided with the double rocker-arm 85, whose opposite ends are respectively connected by links 86 87 with the rock-arms 89 90 of the gas-valves in the pumpcylinder 8.
Said valve-rod 48, which extends through the valve-chest 50 of the motor-cylinder 5, as above described, is provided with adjustable collars 93 94, arranged to engage the respectively opposite ends of the sleeve 95, which loosely encircles said rod. As shown in Fig. IV, said sleeve 95 is provided with oppositelyinclined screw-threads 96 97, respectively engaged with the cut-ofl-valve members 98 99, which ride upon the main valve 42. It may be noted that said rod 48 is not only shifted longitudinally by its connection with the cocentric 26, but is also oscillated in a vertical plane because of the pivotal connection of its opposite extremities to the respective oscillatory arms 46 and 51, and it is to be understood that said rod 48 is loosely fitted in said sleeve 95,so as to enable it to impart rectilinear movement to said sleeve through its collars 93 and 94, which latter may be adjusted longitudinally with respect to said rod 48 to relatively adjust said cut-01f valves and pump-valves. It is also to be understood that said cut-offvalve members 98 99 maybe adjusted toward and away from each other to vary the amount of steam supplied to the cylinder 5 by rotation of the sleeve 95, and such rotation is conveniently effected by means of the hand-wheel 100 and sleeve 101, mounted to rotate in the bearing 102 and rotatably engaged with said sleeve by means of the key 103. (Shown in Fig. II.)
The valve-rod 80, which extends through the valve-chest 81 of the motor-cylinder 6, is arranged like the rod 48, being provided with adjustable collars 105 106, which operatively engage the sleeve 107,which is provided within said valve-chest 81 with cut-ofl valve members similar to the valve members 98 99, above described, and arranged to be adjusted by means of the hand-wheel 108 and the parts operatively connected therewith.
I do not desire to limit myself to the precise details of construction herein set forth, as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features of my invention.
I claim 1. In a duplex pumping-engine, the combination with motor-cylinders and pump-cylinders; of valves for said n'iotor-cylimlers; valves for said pump-cylinders; and, valve mechanism operatively cross-connecting the valves of said motor-cylinders with the valves of said compression-cylinders, substantially as set forth.
2. In a duplex pumping-engine, the combination with motor-cylimlers and wimp-cylinders; of valves for said motor-cylimlers; valves for said pump-cylinders; valve mechanism operatively cross-connecting the valves of said motor-cylinders with the valves of said pumpcylinders; and, means to relatively adjust said motor-valves and pump-valves with respect to said valve mechanism, substantially as set forth.
8. In aduplex pumpingengh1e, the combination with motor-cylinders and ])\1l]11')-(J \lll1- ders in tandem relation; of slide-valves for said motor-cylinders; rotary valves for said pumpcylinders; and valve mechanism operatively cross-connecting said motor-valves with said pump-valves, substantially as set forth.
4. In a duplex pumping-cngine, the combination with motor-cylinders and pump-cylinders in tandem relation; of slide-valves for said motor-cylinders; rotary valves for said pumpcylinders; valve mechanism operatively crossconnecting said motor-valves with said pumpvalves; and means to relatively adjust said motor-valves and pump-valves with respect to said valve mechanism, substantially as set forth.
5. In a duplex pumping-engine, the combination with motor-cylinders and 'nnnp-cylinders; of main slide-valves for said motor-cylinders; auxiliary cut-off slide-valves arranged to cooperate with said main valves; valves for said pump-cylinders; means to operate said main valves independently of said cut oil valves; and, means to operate said cut-oli' valves and said pump-valves in cross-connected relation, substantially as set forth.
6. In a duplex pumping-engine, the combination with motor-cylinders and pump-cylinders; of main slide-valves for said motor-cyl inders; auxiliary cut-off slide-valves arranged to cooperate with said main valves; valves for said pump-cylinders; means to operate said main valves independently of said cut-01f valves; means to operate said cut-off valves 3 cylinders; valves forssaid pump-cylinders;
and, valve mechanism operatively connecting a valve of one set of motor-cylinders with a valve of the other set of pump-cylinders, substantially as set forth.
8. In aduplex pumping-engine,the combination with duplicate sets of motor-cylinders and pump-cylinders; of valves for said motorylinders; valves for said pump -cylinders; valve mechanism operatively connecting a valve of one set of motor-cylinders with a valve of the other set of pump-cylinders; and, means to relatively adjust said valves with respect to said valve mechanism,substantially as set forth.
9. In a duplex pumping-engine, the combination with duplicate sets of motor-cylinders and pump-cylinders; of main valves for said motor-cylinders; auxiliary cut-ofi valves arranged to cooperate with said main valves; valves for said pump-cylinders; means to operate said main valves independently of said cut-off valves; and, means to operate said on toff valves and said pump-valves in cross-con nected relation, substantially as set forth.
10. In a duplex pumping-engine, the combination with duplicate sets of motor-cylinders and pump-cylinders; of main valves for said motor-cylinders; auxiliary cut-off valves arranged to cooperate with said main valves;
valves for said pump-cylinders; means to opcrate said main valves independently of said cut-off valves; means to operate said cut-ofl valves and said pump-valves in cross-connected relation; and, means to adjust said cut-01f tive cylinders; sleeves respectively attached 'to motor-valves; valve-rods respectively extending through said sleeves and provided with means to operatively engage the latter; means operatively connecting said rods with pump-valves; and, means to adjust said sleeves with respect to said rods, substantially asset forth. v
13. In an engine, the combination with motor and pump cylinders; of pistons for the respective cylinders; valves for the respective cylinders; means operatively connecting said pistons with a common crank-shaft; an eccentric on said crank-shaft; and, means operatively cross-connecting valves of different I and pump-cylinders; of valves for the respec'- cylinders with said eccentric, substantially as set forth.
- 14:. In an engine, the combination with motor and pump cylinders; of pistons for the respective cylinders; valves for the respective cylinders; means operatively connectingsaid -rod common to a plurality of said pistons; a
crank shaft operatively connected with said piston-rod; valves for said cylinders; and, valve mechanism operatively cross-connecting valves of different cylinders, arranged to positively actuate them in definite relation, substantially as set forth.
16. In an engine, the combination with motor and pump cylinders in tandem relation; of
pistons for the respective cylinders; a pistonrod common to a plurality of said pistons; a crank-shaft operatively connected with said piston-rod; valves for said cylinders; valve mechanism operatively cross connecting valves of different cylinders, arranged to posi- IIO tively actuate them in definite relation; and,
means to relatively adjust said valves with respect to said valve mechanism, substantially as set forth. V
17. In an engine, the combination with motor and pump cylinders in tandem-relation; of
pistons for the respective cylinders; a pistonrod common to a plurality of said pistons; a-
crankshaft operatively connected with said piston-rod; a slide-valve for one of said cylinders; a rotary valve for another of'said cyl- &
rod common to a plurality of said pistons; a crank-shaft operatively connected With said piston-rod; a slide-valve for one of said cylinders; a rotary valve for another of said cylinders; valve mechanism operatively connecting' said valves of different cylinders, arranged to positively actuate them in definite relation; and, means to relatively adjust said valves with respect to said valve mechanism, substantially as set forth.
19. In an engine, the combination with motor and pump cylinders; of pistons for the respective cylinders; means operatively connecting said pistons With a common crankshaft; valves for the respective cylinders; a sleeve operatively connected with a valve of one cylinder; arod operatively connected With a valve of another cylinder; and, means operatively connecting said rod and sleeve, substantially as set forth.

In an engine, the combination with motor and pump cylinders; of pistons for the respective cylinders; means operatively connecting said pistons with a common crankshaft; valves for the respective cylinders; a sleeve operatively connected with a valve of one cylinder; a rod operativcly connected with a valve of another cylinder; means operatively connecting said rod and sleeve; and, means to adjust said sleeve with respect to said rod, substantially as set forth.
21. In a compressor, the combination with a steam motor-cylinder; of a pump-cylinder; valves for said cylinders; an eccentric; and, means operatively connecting an inlet-valve of thepump-cylinder and a steam-cnt-o'li' valve of said motor-cylinder with the same eccentric, substantially as set forth.
