SPECIFICATION forming part'of Letters Patent No. 533,063, dated January 29, 1895.
Application filed May 5, 1894. Serial No. 510,204. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. HOPKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Tube Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in water tube boilers and has for its object the production of a boiler for steam or hot Water heating which shall be simple in construction and efficient and economical in its use, and by means of which the water tubes can be readily and easily cleaned.
The invention comprises a boiler having front and rear groups of water tubes arranged in series, the tubes of each series opening at their ends into stand pipes, the outer stand pipes of said series being provided with plug covered openings through which access can be had to the water tubes.
. The invention also comprises the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing:Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view illustrating my improved boiler. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line 00-03, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view of one of the outer stand pipes of one of the series of water tubes.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the casing which may be of any suitable material, a the fire box, a the grate, and a the ash pit.
B, B designate the front and rear groups of Water tubes arranged in series I). These Water tubes of each series open at their inner ends into central stand pipes C and at their outer ends into outer stand pipes D, D. These latter stand pipes are provided with holes or openings directly opposite the outer ends of the water tubes, said holes or openings being normally covered by plugs 12. By
removing these plugs access can be had to the water tubes for the purpose of cleansing and removing any incrustation or the like. The series of stand pipes C are arranged closely together side by side, in such way as to'form a dividing Wall between the front and rear portions of the boiler casing, and the same constitute awater back. The series of outer stand pipes D, D are likewise arranged closely together side by side, thus forming water backs at the front and rear portions of the casing, the same serving to confine the heat between the two outer series of stand pipes and the central series of stand pipes.
E designates the header which is preferably composed of a series of sections bolted together. Into the header open pipes or tubes 8 which lead from a supplemental chamber e, which latter is connected bytubes a with the series of stand pipes D.
F is a series of pipes or tubes which communicate direct with the stand pipes D, D, and with the stand pipes C through the medium of short pipes or tubesf, the object of said pipes or tubes F being to establish communication between the series of stand pipes C and D, D and the header. Water is supplied to the central stand pipes by means of a pipe or main M which is connected to any preferred source of supply.
From what has been said it will be seen that I have produced a simple and efficient boiler whereby either hot water or steam may be produced for heating or other purposes and that but a minimum amount of fuel will be required to obtain a high heating capacity. It will also be seen that my improved boiler can be readily and easily cleaned and the incrustation of the water tubes readily removed.
In a boiler constructed as herein described I am enabled to use smaller tubes than are ordinarily employed and in this I obtain a decided advantage. In the first place the small tubes offer less resistance to the products of combustion and the waterin the tubes will not be driven back and forth by the generation of steam as occurs in long tubes. Then again the tubes are short and can be readily removed and replaced when burned out much easier than tubes of greater length, as when extended between end headers or stand pipes and no central header is employed. While the complete sections maybe made of cast-iron, I prefer to make them of a combination of cast and wrought iron.
I claim as my invention-- l. The herein-described improved watertube boiler, comprising front and rear groups of water tubes arranged in series, central series of stand-pipes forming a dividing wall between the front and rear portions of the boiler casin g and into which said tubes open at theirinner ends, and outer stand-pipes into which said tubes open at their outer ends, substantially as set forth.
2. The herein-described water-tube boiler, comprising front and rear groups of water tubes arranged in series, central series of stand-pipes arranged close together, side by side, forming a dividing wall between the front and rear portions of the boiler casing and into which said water tubes open, and the outer series of stand-pipes into which said Water tubes also open, said latter stand-pipes being also arranged close together, side by side, substantially as set forth.

The herein-described improved watertube boiler, comprising front and rear groups of water-tubes arranged in series, a central series of stand-pipes arranged close together, side by side, forming a dividing wall between the front and rear portions of the boiler casing and into which said water-tubes open at their inner ends, and'the outer stand-pipes into which said water-tubes open at their outer ends, said latter stand-pipes being arranged close together, side by side, and provided with plug-covered openings on a line with said water-tubes, substantially as set forth.
