Be it known that I, VICTOR BERDELLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawing-Pens, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has relation todrawingor ruling pens; and it relates more particularly to the construction and arrangement of such a pen, whereby certain adjustable movements X of the same in use are obtained. 'f

The principal objects of my invention are, first, to provide a simple, durable and effective drawing or rulingpen; second, to provide a ruling or drawing pen 'having one of the blades thereof arranged so as to permit of a sliding movement of the same to permit of cleaning the inner surfaces of the blades of 'the instrument; third, to provide a drawing or ruling pen with astock having two blades,

one being integral with the stock and the other engaging obliquely and pivoted to the stock, the blades normally approaching each other at the points thereof, a projecting-arm securedto the pivotal blade to permit of a sidewise movement of the same from the other of the blades to afford a cleaning of the inner surfaces of both of the blades andan adjusting screw secured into the stock and adapted to limit the range of movement of the projecting arm; fourth, to providea drawing or ruling pen with a spring metal blade provided with a'regulating back stop and lever arm for parting the blades of the instrument and a screw or the like for setting the blades with respect to each other, and,fth, to provide a drawingv or ruling pen having means connected therewith to secure different adjustable movements of the blades and one of said blades arranged to permit of a sidewise movement to clean thel inner surfaces of the blades of the instrument.

My invention consists of a drawing or ruling pen constructed, arranged and adapted for operation in substantially the manner, hereinafter described and claimed.

The natureand scope of my invention will be more fully understood' from the following description taken in connection-with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in whichvof the stemor handle A.

bu, is a stud or press pin engaging through a slot in the rear portion of the stock B, with the fulcrumed lever b5, which* is adapted to manipulate said lever b5, in up and down directions so as to spread the blades apart arequired distance from each other. The spring metal blade B2, of the instrument, is secured to the stock B, by means of a stud or screw 612, and which stock B', is cut away obliquely in order to accommodate the complemental oblique end Z113, of the said blade B2, as illustrated in Figs. l and 3, and which blade is provided with an arched recess b, in the body thereof, in order to give a spring action to the same and tapers therefrom to the outer end thereof and normally contacting with the opposite outer extremity of the blade B. This blade is provided with a ilaring or bent arm :o D15, rigidly secured thereto, and in rear of the same and in engagement with said stock B, is a threaded back stop b1, which by means of a nut Z217, mounted thereon is adapted to limit the movement of the blades B2 from the blade B', through the intervention of the flaring or bent arm Z215. The forward portion of the blade B2, is provided with an adjusting screw i112, extending through the body of said blade and adapted to permit of the required adjustment of the respective blades with respect to each other, in the actuation of the blade B2, with respect to the blade B, by means of said arm D15, controlled as to its movement by the threaded back-stop Z916, by means of the nut Z117, afforded a range of movement in up and down directions thereon.

In use, for cleaning the inner surfaces of the blades, thespring blade B2, is simply slid by hand sidewise on the screw or pivot 1912, so as to occupy the position illustrated in Fig. 3, and when one surface is cleaned that of of the other blade may be cleaned by reversing the position of the instrument, as will be readily understood; and the respective blades g5 then restored to their normal positions with respect to each other and with the outer extremities in contact with one another as illustrated in Fig. l, of the drawings.

It will be manifestly obvious that as to minor details modifications may be made as to the arrangement of the parts of the pen hereinbefore described; and hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement of the several parts 6o for the performance of the functions explained; but,

Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A drawing pen provided with a handle or staff having a stock with a blade provided with a fulcrumed lever and an adjusting screw, a spring blade connected with said stock and having a regulating back stop connected therewith and a lever and an adjust ing screw connected with said blade, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. A drawing pen having a handle provided with a stock having two blades, whereof one is fixed and provided with a fulcrumed lever, and whereof the other is adapted to be parted from said fixed blade by said lever, and said blades adj usted with respect to each other by means of a stud-screw, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. A drawing pen provided with a staff or handle having a removable stock with an integral blade, a lever fulcrumed thereto and provided at one end with a press-stud and at the other end with an adjusting screw, a compleniental spring blade obliquely engaging said stock and provided with an adjusting screw and said blade adapted to be moved sidewise of said stock, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. 4. A drawing pen provided with a staff or handle removably connected with a stock having a rear channel and side lugs, a lever fulcru med to said lugs and provided with a pressstud and an adjusting screw, a complemental spring metal blade in sliding engagement with said stoel: having a threaded stem with an adjusting nut, and a curved or bent arm rigidly secured to said spring metal blade, and an adjusting screw, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

5. A drawing pen having two blades normally contacting with each other, whereof one is provided with an adjusting screw, a fixed lever connected with said blade, and whereof the other is provided with a fulcrumed lever having at one end a press-stud and at the other end an adjusting screw eX- tending through said blade, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

6. A drawing pen provided with a stock having two blades, whereof one is formed integral with said stock and whereof the other engages obliquely' and is pivoted to said stock and both of said blades normally approaching each other at the points thereof, a projecting arm secured to said pivotal blade to move the same sid ewise from the other of said blades to permit of the cleaning of the inner surfaces of both of said blades and an adjusting screw secured into said stock and adapted to limit the range of up and down movement of said arm, substantially as set forth.
