Be it known that I, JAMES. W. DENNIS, of' Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Dental Plugger, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to dental pluggers, and it has for its object to provide such an 'instrument with a yielding working face,

work the mercury to the surface of the filling,

from whence it can be readily removed, producing a very hard and non-shrinkable filling.

The invention will be first described in connection with the drawings and then pointed out in the claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of oneform of plugger, illustrating a yielding shoe applied thereto, the shoe being in longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a back view of the plugger, the shoe being in section, illustrating the formation of the head of the plugger. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of another form of plugger, illustrating the application of the shoe to its head, the shoe being in section. Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the plugger shown in Fig. 3, the yielding shoe being applied to said head. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a form of plugger the head whereof is covered with or is constructed of hard rubber or similar material, the head being likewise adapted to receive ashoe. Fig. 6 is a front elevation of the head portion of Serial No. 516,435. (No model-) the plugger shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of a plugger in which the head is formed entirely of, or is provided with a permanently attached covering of a yieldingmaterial; and Fig. 8 is an under face View of the form of plugger shown in Fig. 7.

In carrying out the invention any approved 5 5 form of handle A may be employed, and with reference to the plugger B shown in Fig. 1, said instrument is provided with a head 10 of somewhat oval shape, or somewhat elongated, the head being of the same metal as the body. A shoe 11, constructed of soft rubber or other yielding or pliable material, is made to fit closely over the head 10, the said shoe being readily removable from the head, whereby in the use of this plugger, when the elastic shoe is in position thereon, the shoe is brought in contact with the filling that is to be pressed to place. Consequently, the yielding shoe will admit of a soft filling, such as amalgam, being entered into the cavity and worked around prominences much more evenly and expeditiously than under ordinary circumstances where the head is of steel or like non-yielding material. Furthermore, the action of the yielding surface of the plugger upon amalgam is such that it forces all or the greater portion of the mercury contained in the amalgam to the surface of the filling, from whence it may readily be removed. Therefore, the filling is less liable to shrinkage, and in fact the filling is rendered substantiallynon-shrinkable, and is capable of becoming exceedingly hard in a short space of time In Fig. -3 the plugger Bis shown as provided with a head 10 which in cross section is circular, and at its under-surface is fiat, the head standing at a decided angle to the body, and the yielding shoe 11, which is fitted over this head, is of the same shape and en- 0 tirely covers theworking surface of the head.

In Figs. 5 and 6, the plugger B is provided with a head 10, either covered with hard rubber or like material, or the head may be made entirely of such a material. In this instance 5 the head is formed at the end of a straight body, and is somewhat fanshaped or oval in general contour. adapted to receive a shoe 11 of soft rubber or of a yielding material, and the head is capable of effective use, when the shoe is removed, for polishing or rubbing down surfaces.

In Figs. 7 and 8 I have illustrated another form of plugger B, in which the head is decidedly curved from the body, and the head is illustrated as being formed of a yielding material such as soft rubber, the said material being permanently attached to the body.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A dental plugger having its working surface provided with a removable shoe of yield- 20 ing material, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
