To all} whom it may concern.-

Be 1t known that I,'JOHN O. BIOKFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented anew and usefulImprovementin Slippers or Shoes; of which the following is a specification.

. The object of my invention is to improve the construction of that class of slippers or shoes, which are formed with a crocheted or knitted upper, which is sewed or secured to a leather sole, and to this end, my invention consists of the parts and combinations of parts as hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a slipper or shoe constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, of the same.

As heretofore constructed, the uppers of slippers of this character have been provided with a tape binding around their lower edge, and the tape binding and sole have been stitched through and through to secure the sole and upper together. I have found that in practice, this construction is objectionable, as the stitches for holding the upper and sole together are directly exposed on the wearing face of the sole in such a manner that they soon wear through, the sole and upper becoming detached. In the construction which I have devised, I do away with the tape binding and the stitches or sewing for securing the upper and sole together are so located as not to be exposed to wear.

Referring to the drawings and ,in detail, A designates a crocheted or knitted worsted upper, which is provided along its lower end with a selvage or binding 12, which is crocheted or knit integral therewith.

B designates the sole of the slipper, and, as

' ordinarily constructed, the sole is provided with an inner sole 0, which carries and supports a lining or cushion of wool, as shown at D.

In the construction which I preferably employ, the sole B is rabbeted or cut away along its outer edge as shown at 10, leaving an extended lip or projection 11, ,to which the upper may be secured. The upper A and the sole B are then secured by a thread or stitching, which is overcast, or extends over and over between the extended lip 11- and the binding 12' of the upper.v By this construction, it will be seen that I have provided a very neat and simple means for securing the sole and upper together, that I have entirely done away with the tape binding, and that the upper is secured directly to the sole,and need not be reversed or turned wrong side out.

I am aware that slight changes may be made in the construction of my device by those who are skilled in the art, and I do not wish, therefore, to be limited to the exact details which I have shown and described, but

What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. In a slipper or shoe, the combination of a crocheted or knitted upper having an inteovercast or sewed over and over to said projection, substantially as described.

2. The combination of an outer sole having its lower edge rabbeted or cut away to leave a circumferential lateral projection above the wearing surface thereof, and an inner sole or lining of woolor similar material mounted thereon and secured thereto, substantially as described.
