Beit known that LELI MooRMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winterset, in the county of Madison and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Generators; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
fMy invention relates to improvements in steam generators and it has for its general object to provide a steam generator embodyingsuch a constructionthat the' generation of steam will take place immediately upon letting water into it.
A further object of my invention is to provvide steam generators with means whereby the steam may readily be conveyed to a receptacle containing grain or food to be cooked for stock as well as for the purposes of transmitting heat where steam may be used.
The objects and ad vantages will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the annexed drawings.
Figure l is a vertical longitudinal central section of my improved steam generator. Fig.
2 is afront elevation of same. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modified form of generator the same being in position ready for use. Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal central section of the generator as illustrated in Fig. 4.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, A designates the boiler which is preferably oblong in plan view and the top or cover A2 and sides A3 of said boiler are preferably stamped from a single piece of sheet metal and pressed in such `shape that the sides will project downward and outward so that when the bottom A4 there# of is fixed to the lower edges of the sides said boiler will be smaller at the top than at the bottom. By this construction of boiler it will be plainly seen, by inspecting Figs. l and 3, that when the boiler is placed within the outer casing B it will retain as great a generative surface as though the sides A3 thereof were vertical, and furthermore by this construction an annular space is formed between the sides of .the boiler, the upper end of the per end of said casing and said casing is of such height that there is a space B3 beneath the boiler and the surface which supports it in which a lire can be'built, or oil, gasoline, or gas burners can be placed for applying heat to the bottom of the boiler as required in operation. A brick wallmay be substituted for said metal casing. When fuel, such as wood or-coal, is used suitable grate bars, such as are shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5, can be placed in the lower end of the casing B and a door B4 having a draft opening B5 is hinged to the front end of said casing so that accesscan be gained to the space B3 for operating the burners or replenishing the fire whichever the ycase may be.
' The burners hereinbefore mentioned can be of any ordinary construction. Therefore it is not deemed necessary to illustrate them in the drawings.
C designates the smoke pipe one end of which is connected to the rear end of casing B adjacent to the boiler and the other end can be connected to a suitable chimney.
D designates the induction pipe one end of which communicates with the interior of the boiler adjacent to the front end thereof while the other end of said pipe is connected to an elevated tank7 or any suitable water supply. Said pipe is provided with a stop cock D2 for regulating the flow of water into said boiler.
E designates the steam outlet pipe one end of which communicates with the interior of the boiler and is for the purpose of conveying the steam to the receptacle which contains the food to be cooked or heated as the case may be.
Connected to the rear end of the boiler adjacent to the upper surface of the bottom Referring to the modification illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, the parts identical with those just described will be referred to by the same reference symbols.
H designates a boiler which is constructed of a bottom plate H2 having a downwardly pending marginal flange H3 to which the lower end of the sides IAI4 are iixed, by means of rivets H5, and the cover Hof said boiler is provided with a downwardly pending ange H7 which is connected to the upper ends of the sides H4 by means of rivets H8. Said bottom plate is located a distance above the lower end of the boiler so as to form a marginal flange on the lower end thereof and said flange extends over the upper end of the casing I and is for the purpose of holding said boiler in position with said casing.
It can readily be seen by inspecting Figs. l and 5 that the bottoms of the boilers are at an angle thereof the rear end being the lowest. When water is injected into said boilers through the induction pipe D it will flow rearwardly over the bottom and form a thin sheet of water thereon and the stop cock D2 is so adjusted that the How of water will be such that it will be converted into steam while passing from the front to the rear of said boiler and the steam, as it is generated, will be conting water flow upon the elevated part of the l inclined bottom and off the lowest part as set forth, in combination with an open-topped furnace chamber or case for the purposes stated.
2. An improved steam generator, comprising a hot air chamber having an open top, means for generating heat in said chamber, a boiler having an inclined bottom fitted in the open top of the hot air chamber, a water supply pipe at one end of the boiler, means for regulating the tlow of water through said pipe, a water exhaust pipe at the lowest end of the inclined bottom of the boiler and a steam eduction tube at the top portion of the boiler, arranged and combined to operate in the manner set forth, for the purposes stated.
