GEORGE C. HAGADONE, OF NEVELL, IOXVA.
FU RNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 440,562, dated November 11, 1890.
Application filed July 17, 1890. Serial No. 359,074. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. IIAGADONE, a citizen of Newell, in the county of Buena Vista and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnaces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in furnaces, and is intended more particularly for generating steam with which feed is cooked, said feed being contained in suitable receptacles connected with the boiler, the invention having for itsobject to provide a boiler with heads of improved construction; and it consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of my improvement, and Fig. 2 shows certain details.
A represents the frame or body of the furnace, having a downwardly-extendin g portion at its front end to produce a fire-box B and and an ash-pit C, being provided, respectively, with doors D and E, between which a grate F is located. Secured upon the frame A and extending longitudinally thereof is a boiler G, the front end of which is located directly over the fire-box B. Each head of the boiler G is provided at its periphery with a rim or flange G', said rim or flange being preferably made of steel and cast solid in the heads and adapted to project outwardly at right angles therefrom, as shown in Fig. l. To this flange or rim G the shell of the boiler is riveted or otherwise secured. The front and rear heads of the boiler are provided with aligned openings a b for the respective ends of a series of tubes H, said openings being preferably located at points somewhat below the center of the boiler. Projecting from the rear head of the boiler and encircling the opening a and slightly removed therefrom is an annular flange o, preferably having its interior wall inclined. Located on' the rear end of the boiler and adapted to bear on the annular flange c and rim G of the rear head of the boiler is a plate l, having an annular flange 2 to enter the annular flange or ring c, the exterior of the flange 2 being inclined to coincide with the inclined interior wall of the flange or ring c. The plate lis also provided with a flange 3, which lies parallel with the rim G at the bottom of the boiler, said flanges being secured together in any suitable manner. The plate l projects below the boiler, and is provided with an opening 4, which communicates with a chamber 5 beneath the boiler, said projecting portion of the plate l being secured to the frame of the furnace. Secured to and projecting from the periphery of the plate l is a ring 6, to which acap-plate 7 is secured, thus producing an elbow 11, which forms a connection between the opening 4 and the boiler-tubes H. The front head of the boiler is also provided with an annular ring 8, adapted to encircle the opening Z2 therein, said flange being adapted to receive the elbow 9 of a smoke-stack lO.
From the construction of the furnace, as above set forth, it will be seen that heat and products of combustion from the fire on the grate F will pass from the fire-box B through the chamber 5, heating the bottom of the boiler, thence through the elbow ll to the boiler-tubes H, thence through said tubes to the front end of the boiler, and linally out through the smokestack l0. The steam generated by this furnace may be carried by means of pipes to receptacles containing feed, by which means the feed will be cooked.
A furnace constructed and arranged as above set forth is very simple, durable, and effective in the performance of the functions for which it is invented.
Slight changes might be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of my invention or limiting its scope. I-Ience I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details of construction herein set forth; but, i
I-Iaving fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a boiler, boiler-fines extending through the latter, and a iire-boX and hotair chamber located beneath the boiler, of an outwardly-projecting annular flange on each of the boiler-heads around the opening for the flues, a plate l, having a ISO having a ring 6, adapted to encircle the edge ange tted to the fiange on the rear head of In testimony whereof I have signedthis the boiler, and another fiange beneath the specification in the presence of twolsubserib- 1o boiler and having an opening for the passage ing Witnesses. f
of the products of combustion, a cap-plate GEORGE C HAGADONE of the plate 1, and a iue fitted to the ange Vitnesses: on the opposite end of the boiler, suhstzm` J. P. LAWTON, tially as set forth. D. C. MILLER.
