UNITED STATES ALEXANDER B. BURNS, OF GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN.
BOILER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 24, 1907.
Application filed May 14,1906. Serial No. 316.603-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER B. BURNS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Green Bay, in the county of Brown and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its object to provide a simple, economical and durable ash-pit for domestic heating boilers of the horizontal type, its arrangement being such that it materially increases the ash-pit area and at the same time serves as a front support for the boiler, said invention consisting in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts as hereinafter fully set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 represents a transverse sectional view of a boiler embodying the features of my invention, and Fig. 2, a front elevation of the same partly in section as indicated by line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates a fire-box, B thefire tubes connecting the front and rear heads of the boiler and C the soot chamber back of the rear head, which chamber is had access to by means of a rear door D of the usual construction. The return smoke flues E lead from the rear boiler head and communicate with a smoke box F adjacent to the front head of the boiler.
The boiler proper is supported at its rear by a saddle G, while the front or fire box extension is supported by the ash-pit frame H, upon the rear edge of which rests the front boiler head. The circular side-walls of the fire box are formed by extensions of the cylin drical boiler, while the top thereof is slightly arched and passes directly between the lire tubes and return smoke flues E there being an inner wall I surrounding said fire box top and sides for the purpose of forming a Water-jacket which communicates with the boiler, it being understood that said boiler may be either utilized for hot water or steam, for which purpose inlet and outlet pipe connections a, b, are provided. The outer and inner walls of the fire box are cut away near the bottom of the boiler and closed by a filler strip K, as are also the front walls L, L, which walls form a continuation of the water-jacket and are joined by a filler frame M, that forms an opening for access to the fire-pot. A door-plate N is secured to the front of the ash-pit frame II by bolts or rivets c and also to the front wall L of the fire box by rivets (Z, which pass through said wall together with the frame M and also wall L as shown. The said plate is provided with the usual coal and ash-pit doors 0, P, respectively, and also carries a shaker-lever e in link connection with a rocking grate Q, which grate is mounted upon rails R fast to the ash-pit frame and door-plate. These features are common to heaters of the type to which my invention pertains and form no part of my invention.
By the above description it will be seen that by cutting away the circular side-walls of the fire box and securing thereto a cast frame, which together with the door-plate N constitutes a solid ash-pit, I am enabled to provide an ample ashpit without increasing the height of the boiler, which pit also serves as a solid support for the front end of said boiler, thereby simplifying and materially increasing the efficiency of this type of heater.
I claim:
1. A horizontal boiler comprising a circular shell having front and rear heads. a doublewall fire-box extension pro jecting; from the shell, the outer side-walls of the fire-box being extensions of said shell, a grateopening in the bottom of the double-wall fire-box, a filler-strip interposed between the fire-box walls at the grate-opening, a doublewall front head for the firebox, a front opening in the doublewall head, a fillerframe for the opening interposed between the walls of said head, in combination with an ash-pit frame having side-supporting; walls, flanges projecting from the side-supporting walls, means for securing the flanges to the aslrpit opening; in the firebox, a rear-wall connect ing the side-walls of the ash-pit frame, said rear-avail being adapted to close the ash-pit and support the front end of the boiler-shell, and a door-plate closure secured to the front opening of the aforesaid fire-box and aslnpit frame.
2. In a fire-box for boilers, a doubleavall jacket, front and bottom openings therein, closure-strips for the opening's interposed between the double-walls, in combination with an ash-pit frame for supporting the firebox at the bottom opening therein, said frame being open at its front,
and a door-plate secured to the front of the aslrpit frame and front-walls of the firebox around the opening therein. In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin in the presence of two witnesses.
