Beit known that I, J EHIAL H. CLEVELAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toy Pistols, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of toy pistols which are provided with a magazine for receiving a number of fulminating caps and a feed device whereby the caps are successively delivered to the anvil or cap receptacle against which the hammer strikes.
The object of my invention' is to produce a simple toy pistol of this character which can be cheaply manufactured.
In the accompanying drawingsz--Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved pistol, showing the position of the parts when the hammer is down. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the position of the parts when the hammer is cocked. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the breech of the pistol. Fig. 4 is a cross section in line 4-4, Fig. 1, looking toward the muzzle of the pistol. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the barrel.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
A represents the handle or stock of the pistol and B the barrel both of which are preferably cast in two sections or halves, secured together by rivets in the ordinary manner.
C is the pivoted hammer arranged with its lower portion in a recess formed in the pistol body inrear of the barrel and mounted upon a horizontal rivet or pivot pin c, and d is the spring of the hammer which is confined at its rear end within the hollow handle of the pis,- tol and bears with its front end against the hammer, in a well known manner.
e is the trigger preferably formed integrally with the hammer and projecting downward through a longitudinal slot in the under side of the body.
f is the usual cap cavity or anvil arranged in front of the hammer above the rear end of the barrel.
The hollow barrel forms a magazine G which is adapted to receive a number of fulminating caps or wafers g.
h is a vertically reciprocating carrier or delivery slide which is applied to the open rear end of the cap magazine and whereby the caps in the magazine are successively elevated and delivered to the cap cavity or anvil. This slide is guided at its vertical edges in upright grooves h formed in the adjacent side walls of the pistol body, these vgrooves and the edges of the slide being preferably constructed of dovetail form, as shown in Fig. 3. The slide is provided on its front side with a shoulder h2, which is adapted to engage under the rearmost cap of the series for elevating it.
I is an actuating lever which operates the delivery slide and which is in turn operated by the hammer. This actuating lever is preferably mounted on the same pivot as the hammer and arranged on one side of the latter. The actuating lever is provided on the front side of its pivot with a pair of arms or jaws z' which straddle a lug h3 projecting rearwardly from the lower portion of the delivery slide, and on the rear side of its pivot with a similar pair of'jaws z" which straddle a nose or projection c formed on the adjacent side of the hammer above the pivot of the latter.
J is a follower arranged in the magazine G, in front of the series of caps contained therein and exerting a constant pressure upon the caps so as to press the rearmost one against the front side of the delivery slide, ready to be presented to the anvil. The follower. is yieldingly held against the caps by a spiral spring lc arranged in the barrel and bearing at its rear end against the follower and at its front e'nd against an adjustable head or abutment Z arranged in the front portion of the barrel. This head is provided with a radial locking pin or projection Z which extends through a longitudinal slot m, formed in the barrel, preferably on its under side, and extending to the front end thereof. This slot is formed along one of, its edges with a row of notches rm.,in one of which'the pin of the adjustable head is engaged by moving it laterally into the same. backward or forward in the barrel the tension of the follower spring is increased or diminished accordingly. The caps are introduced into the magazine through the open front end 9s By adjusting this head IOO ' of the barrel.
After removing the follower with its spring and the adjustable abutment, and after inserting the caps, these parts are again replaced.
When the hammer is in its normal forward position, as shown in Fig. 1, the cap delivery slide is drawn down sufficiently to leave the cap cavity unobstructed and its shoulder is on a level with the lower side of the magazine, so that its shoulder engages under the rear most cap. Upon cooking the hammer, th nose c of the latter strikes the jaw of the actuating lever located in rear -of the nose, thereby swinging the front arm of the lever upward and causing the delivery slide to be elevated by the lower front jaw of the-"actuating lever engaging against the under side of the lug of the slide, as shown in Fig. 2. The I rearmost cap of the series is thus carried upward kinto the cap cavity by the slide, andz upon pulling the trigger the hammer is swung forward in the usual manner and the capis exploded. During the forward movement of the hammer, its nose strikes the jaw of the actuating lever located in front of the nose, whereby the front arm of the lever is swung downward and caused to lower the slide by the upper front jaw of the lever bearing upon the upper side of the lug on the slide. rlhe arms of the actuating lever are so proportioned that the slide is withdrawn from the path of the hammer-head before the hammer reaches the slide. The nose of the hammer Q andthe lug of the slide have sufficient play between the jaws of the actuating lever to avoid binding of the parts.
The portion of the delivery slide which projects above its shoulder serves as a back support for the cap, whereby the latter is prevented from tipping backward away from the cap cavity during the ascent of the slide.
I -claim as my invention- 1. The combination with the hammer, the cap magazine and the cap cavity or anvil, of a delivery slide applied to said magazine, and a lever interposed between the hammer and the delivery slide and having one arm engaged with the hammer and its other arm engaged with said slide, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with the cap magazine and the cap cavity or anvil, of a reciprocating delivery slide' applied to the rear portion of said magazine and having a projection on its rear side, a pivoted hammer having a nose, and an intermediate actuating lever having jaws on the rear side of its pivot which engage with the nose of the hammer and jaws on the front side of its pivot which engage with the projection of the delivery slide, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with the delivery slide and the hollow barrel open at its front end and having a longitudinal slot extending to the front end thereof and provided with locking notches, a follower arranged in the barrel, an adj ustable abutment arranged in the barrel in front of the follower and having a projection adapted to engage in one of said notches, and a spring interposed between said follower and said abutment, substantially as set forth.
