HOLDER FOR CURLlNG-TONGS WHILE HEATlNG.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,755, dated January 1, 1895.

Be it known that I, GEORGE R. UNKEFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Curling-Tongs While Heating; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Myinvention relates to means for supporting and holding curling tongs while heating them. Its object is to save the fatigue usually incident to that operation; and it consists in providing means easily applicable to any gas jet in which the curling tongs, commonly called curling irons, may be held while heating without any attention from the operator, and in which they may be allowed to remain while not in use.

In the drawingsFigure 1 represents a holder constructed according to my invention, attached to agas burner and holding the curling tongs above the jet in position to be heated. Fig. 2 is a top view of the attaching clamp; and Fig. 3 is a view of the holding clamp, with the tongs therein, viewed in a direction at right angles to that of Fig. 1.

A represents a rod, provided at one end with a clamp afor attaching it to a gas burner or gas bracket, and at the other with a socket a into which fits a rod d which rises to a sufficient height and is then bent across and car ries at its extremity a holding clamp e into which the curling irons may be placed, and which clamp can be turned by the rotation of rod d in the socket 0 so as to be brought directly over the gas jet g, or turned back out of the way when not in use.

The clamp e may be any form of spring clamp, but the form shown, which consists of two rings of spring wire in a continuous coil, I have found to be very efiicient as well as simple and cheap. I prefer to make the clamp e to turn on the rod (1 as a pivot, so that the jaws of the tongs may be .placed in just the desired relation to the gas-jet g, in whichever way the latter maybe turned in relation to the arm A. This swiveling movement may be eifected by afiixing the clamp e to a plate pivoted on the end of the red at, or in any preferred way. The attaching clamp a may also be any suitable form of clamp, that shown in Fig. 2, consisting of an open short sleeve to embrace the burner or bracket and a set-screw b to secure it in place, being a simple and efficient form. If to be attached to the bracket hinstead of the burner i the jaws of the clamp would of course be turned at right angles to the socket 0, instead of being in the same plane as shown.

M represents the curling tongs, m m the usual wooden handles, and l the jaws which are heated and are used to curl the hair.

In hair dressers shops a support for the curling tongs while heating is sometimes improvised, but those who curl their own hair at home are obliged to hold the tongs over agasjet to heat them, usually in a position which requires the hand and arm to be held upraised so long as to cause great fatigue.

By my device no fatigue is caused, as the tongs can be placed in the clamp 6 while it is turned to one side, and thenswung over the jet, and left until sufiiciently hot, wholly avoiding the necessity of holding the tongs while heating. The red at with the clamp 6 can be removed from the socket c and laid aside, leaving the arm A attached to the burner, or, in a dressing-room where the fixture is not unsightly, the whole can be left in place, ready for instant service, and the tongs can also be left in the clamp e when not in use and swung back out of the way, ready to be brought into position for heating, by a mere touch of the finger.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

.A holder for curling tongs while heating, consisting of an arm having at one end a clamp for attaching it to a gas fixture and at the other end a socket in which is pivotally supported a removable rod carrying at its extremity a swiveling clamp for receiving and holding the curling tongs, substantially as described.
