AMOS A. VILCOX AND EVA C. ALDERMAN, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
COPY-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,088, dated January 14, 1896.
Application filed February l, 1895. Serial No. 536,923.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, AMOS A. VILCOX and EVA C. ALDERMAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copy# Holders, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which we have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
The annexed drawings and the following' description set forth in detail one mechanical form embodying the invention, such detail construction being but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention maybe used.
In said annexed drawings, Figure I represents a perspective view of our improved copy-holder, and Fig. Il a front elevation of the same, showing the upright in longitud in al section.
A base A is formed by bending a piece of wire or metal rod into the shape ot a circle, and one end of such wire or rod is bent upward and slightly inclined over the base to form a stud a, to which the upright is secured. The upright consists of a straight wire or rod B, to the lower end of which is secured a piece of metal tube forming a socket b, which iits upon the inclined stud of the base. The socket is formed with a longitudinal slot b', open at its lower end, which slot may slide upon a pin a', projecting from the stud, said slot and pin serving to prevent the socket from turning upon the stud. A sleeve C, having a collar c, slides upon the upper portion of the upright and is guided upon the same by longitudinal slots c", sliding upon guidelugs formed by the ends of a pin b2, inserted through the slots and the upright. The upper end of the upright is curved backward, and again forward and downward, to form a hook B', to the end of which a transverse bar is secured, which forms the upper stationary clamping-jaw, Bcf the holder. A lower movable jaw, C, is secured upon the ends of two diverging curved arms c2, which project upward from the collar of the sliding sleeve upon the upright. Yielding sleeves 02,01. rub ber or similar material, are preferably fitted upon the lower jaw. A coiled spring D iits upon the upright and bears against the upper end of the socket and the lower end of the (No model.)
sliding sleeve, thus serving to force the latter upward and the movable jaw against the stationary jaw.
While, of course, this copy-holder may be employed for holding any kind of copy-sheets, yet it is particularly adapted to the use of stenographers and typewriter-operators, as it is easily portable when the upright is taken off. from the base and the two parts placed iiat together, and will form when again put together a convenient support for the stenogra-phio note-books generally used, the upper portion of the leaves of the book being held by the clamp while the book rests at a convenient incline against the inclined upright. lThe clamp may be easily opened to any reasonable extent by drawing down yupon the collar of the sliding sleeve, and the spring will automatically close the jaws.
@ther modes of applying the principle of our invention may be employed for the mode herein explained. Change may therefore be made as regards 'the mechanism thus dis closed, provided the principles of construction set forth, respectively, in the following,` claims are employed.
Ve therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as our inventionl. In a copy holder, the combination of an upright having a hooked upper end, an upper, stationary clamping jaw secured to the hooked end of the upright, a movable clamping jaw supported by a sleeve sliding upon the upright, and a springbearing against said sleeve, substantially as set forth.
2. In a copy holder, the combination of a base formed from a circularly bent metal rod having one end bent upward to form an inclined stud, an upright having a socket at its lower end fitted upon said stud and a hooked upper portion, a transverse rod secured to the downwardly bent end of said portion to form a station ary clamping jaw, a sleeve sliding upon the upright, a spring forcing said sleeve upward, and a transverse rod supported from said sleeve to form a movable clamping jaw, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing to be our invention we have hereunto set our hands this 29th day of January, A. D. 1895.
