To @ZZ whom' t may concern: Be it known that I, JOHANN C. TAUBER, citizen of the United States, and aresident of Plain Oity,'countyof Madison, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Safes, of which the following is a specification, the principle of theinvention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated .applying that principle so as to distinguish it' from other inventions.

The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail,one mechanical form embodying the invention; such detail construction being but one of various mechanical forms, in which the principle of the invention may be used.

In said annexed drawings-Figure I represents a front view of myimproved match safe; Fig. II, a vertical section of the same, and Figs. III and IV sectional detail views illustrating dierent forms of match guides.

The principal feature of my invention consists in providing means,in a match safe having an lopening from which the matches may be transversely withdrawn,-for preventing the endwise withdrawal of a number of matches, as they drop out through the transverse opening.

A casing, A, is formed with a chamber, A', of a size and shape suitable to hold the sliding portion B of a box of matches, said chamber and box forming together amatch receptacle. The front of said"chamber is preferably formed by a plate, a, of glass or similar translucent or transparent material, which v plate closes the open side of the match box.

A removable rod, a', secures-the box from the rear, within the chamber, or the back of the casing may be closed by a ,movable cover. The lower end of the match box rests upon two horizontal ledges, a3, between the facing edges of which is thus formed a slot, a4, of a width sufficient to admit of the insertion of a finger. The match guides are formed with slots or passages, c, which extendfrom the lower end of the match box out to the ends of the match guides. Said passages may be either tortuous and obstructed, as illustrated in Figs. Il and IV, or they may be straight or curved, as

l illustrated in Fig. III, and without obstrucf tions. In Whatever shape the passages may be, they are of just sufficient width to admit of amatch being withdrawn through them, when held in a transverse and horizontal position. The flanges C are formed with horizontal slots, c', to admit of a match being guided o ut through the match guides.

If desired, acard containing an advertisement or other matter ,may be inserted between the open front of the match box and the glass plate, as indicated at D, or an advertisement or other matter may be marked upon said plate. Y

Matches may be removed from lthe box,--one by one,-by inserting two Iingers between the match guides,-as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. II,-and withdrawing a match in a transverse and horizontal position. For the purpose of preventing wise.

The match guides will thus prevent more than one match being withdrawn at a time, and will thereby prevent the removal of matches in greater numbers than needed for immediate use, such as is liable to take place, if matches are kept in open receptacles at stores, hotels or other public places.

The glass front of the casing will exhibit the matches, so that the quantity of matches in the safe can be ascertained, and the advertising card will not interfere with the inspection of the contents of the safe, as it does not extend entirely down the front.

ther modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed for the mode herein explained. Change may therefore be made as regards the mechanism thus disdisclosed, provided the principles of construction set forth respectively in the following claims are employed.

I therefore particularly point out and dis tinctly claim as my inventionl. In a match safe, a casing formed with a chamber adapted to hold the sliding portion of a match box aud formed at its lower forward edge with an opening of a size suiicientto admit of the removal of a match in a horizontal position, match guides secured over said opening to project at points suiliciently far apart to permit of the insertion of two fingers and formed with slots extending from the opening in the casing to the outer ends of the guides, and cheek pieces at the ends of the opening in the casing and extending parallel with the guides to prevent endwise removal of a match from the guides, substantially as set forth.

In a match safe, a casing formed with a chamber adapted to hold the sliding portion of a match box and formed at its lower forward edge with an opening of a size sulcient to ad mit of the removal of a match ina hori- Zontal position, match guides secured over said opening to project at points sufficiently far apart to permit of the insertion of two fingers and formed with slots tortuous in a vertical plane and extending from the opening in the casing to the outer ends of the guides, and cheek pieces at the ends of the opening in the casing and extending parallel with the guides to prevent endwise removal of a match from the guides, substantially as set forth.
