WIRE-TIGHTIENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,630, dated January 1, 1895.

Application filed July 27, 1 894.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN WILLIAM GLENN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grape Vine, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Wire-Tightener, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is related to that class of wire-stretching devices which are adapted to stretch the wire after it. has been secured to the posts, and to .take up any slack which may exist therein, owing to causes arising subsequent to the first stretching of the wires. These devices usually consist of a handle or lever provided with means for connection with the wires, whereby the lever may be operated to tighten the same. Now my invention does not depart from this broad principle, but consists in certain peculiar features of construction. whereby the simplicity and efficiency of the device are increased. These differences will be fully described hereinafter, and finally embodied in the claim.

In the drawings: Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the invention, it being shown as practically employed; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of the same; Fig. 3, a-detail perspective of the wire-engaging hooks and the bolt for connecting the same to the lever.

The reference numeral 1 indicates the lever, which is formed, by preference, of hard wood, such as oak or walnut, and which is shaped with a reduced and rounded main portion a, terminating at its inner end in the enlarged or head-like portion 19. This part, b, is formed rectangular in cross-section and has its outer end rounded, as may be readily seen by reference to the drawings.

These passages are provided for the reception of the bolt 5, which is a spindle in function, and which is provided with the usual head and nut by which it may be secured in place. This bolt is adjustable throughout'the length of the enlarged portion 1), by means of the passages 4, as will be understood.

6 indicates two hooks which are formed of metallic rods, bent to form the eyes 0, and the hooks proper d, the former being at one end and adapted to receive the respective ends of the bolt 5, while the hooks proper are at the free ends,.and are provided to engage with the wires of the fence, as shown by Fig. 1. The relative length of the hooks 6 is about equal to thatof the enlarged portion b of the lever 1; and the adj ustment of the said hooks is made possible in order that the varying thicknesses of fence-posts may be compensated for, all of which will be understood.

The use of the invention will be well understood, from Fig. 1, and no extended description thereof will be necessary. The device is principally used for tightening the wires and which is opposite the side to which the wire is affixed, and the hooks (i made to extend one on each side of the post, so that the parts 01 thereof will be in position to engage with the wire by hooking over them, as shown in Fig. 1.

Having described the invention, I claim A wire tightener consisting of a lever havthe side of the post with which the rounded one of said passages, and two hooks provided with eyes by which they are pivoted on oppoto site ends of the bolt, substantially as described.
