PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL L. HULSEY, OF CORRIDON, MISSOURI.
FENCE-WIRE FASTENER- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 788,357, dated April 25, 1905.
Application filed July 9,1904. Serial No. 215.907.
To all 10720712, 111 may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL L. HULsEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corridon, in the county of Reynolds, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-VVire Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fence-posts, and more particularly to those for use in constructing wire fences, and has for its object to provide a post to which the wires may be attached at any height and in which the use of staples or other fastening means which are driven into the post is dispensed with.
A further object is to provide a post in which the wire-attaching means may be moved longitudinally of the post and in which a single means may be provided for holding the wireattaching means at different points of their movement and for holding the wires in en gagement therewith.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and it will be understood that modifications of the specilic construction shown may be made and any suitable materials may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure l is a view of a panel of a fence, showing the present form of post in use. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view showing parts of the wire-clamp. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of a post and showing one of the clamps in side elevation. Fig. 4 is a section on line 4 of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawings, the present invention comprises an upright 5, provided with a longitudinal slot 6, the upright being sharpened at its lower end for engagement in the ground, and slidably disposed in the slot 6 is a horizontally-bifurcated member 7, having a head 8 at one end, which rests against the rearward face of the upright. The member 10 there is pivoted a cam-lever 11.
between the spaced portions of the member 7 between the cam-lever and the forward face of the upright is a plate 12, having laterallyextending wings 13 at its ends which lie at the sides of the spaced members. The cam-lever 11 is so disposed that it maybe operated to bring its cam-surface into engagement with the plate 12 to clamp the latteragainst the forward face of the upright.
As shown, a plurality of the members 7 are disposed in the slot 6, and when it is desired to attach wires to the post the wires are passed between the plates 12 and the forward face of the upright, the cam-lever 11 having been previously moved out of engagement with the plates, and when the wires have been stretched to the desired tightness and the members 7 have been moved to the correct positions upon the uprights the cam-levers are operated to bring their cam-faces into engagement with the plates 12, which clamps these plates against the wires to prevent movement thereof, at the same time clamping the members 7 in position upon the upright.
What is claimed is In a fence-post, the combination with a slotted upright, of amember including a head having two spaced parallel arms extending laterally therefrom intermediate of its ends, said member being disposed with its arms projecting through the slot of the post and with the end portions of its head against the rearward face of the post at the sides of the slot, a plate having a reduced portion intermediate of its ends disposed with said reduced portion between the spaced arms and with its end portions projecting over the forward face of the post at the sides of the slot, and a cam-lever pivoted between the spaced portions beyond the plate, and movable into engagement with the plate to clamp the latter against a wire disposed between it and the upright, and to clamp the head of the member against the upright to prevent movement of the head with res pec thereto.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL L. HULSEY.
