SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 531,491, dated December 25, 1894. 7 Application filed December 7, 1893. Serial No. 493,017- (lilo model.)

'Be it known that I, WILLIAM FLORENCE WILSON,'0f Cookstown, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Latches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in gate latches, whereby the locking :latch can be readily adjusted at all times in relation to the keeper in case the gate sags, and without removing theentire latch frame.

The invention consists of a latch and a bolt engaging the said latch and held adj ustably.

in the latch frame.

The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is a face view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional front view of the same on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a face view of thelatch. Fig. 5 is a rear face view of the same; and Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional plan view of part of the improvement.

The improved gate latch is provided with aframe plate A, secured by screws or other means to the gate B, and on the front end of the said frame plate is secured or formed abolt, to pass the said head into or outof the' dove-tail. The shank. of the bolt Fpasses througha vertically disposed slot G, formed in a cap G, engaging with its forward end the stirrup G, and fitted with its top and bottom into inclined recesses A formed in the face of the frame plate A, as is plainly illustrated in'Fig. 3. On the outer end of the bolt F screws a winged or other nut F to securely lock the said bolt E in place and also the cap G. r

The handle D of the latch D extends rearward through an opening in the outer end of the cap G, as is plainlyillustrated in Fig. 2. Now, itwill be seen that by slackening the winged nut F the bolt F may be moved up or down in its slot G and dove-tail A, so that the forward end of the latch D is in proper relation to the keeper E, and the latch will properly lock the gate to the post B.

When the bolt F has been moved to the desired position the winged nut F is screwed up so as to securely lock the bolt in place, the latch D freely turning on the said bolt as its fulcrum. The latch D is provided on its front and rear faces with narrow ridges D and D of which the rear one drops into the front part of the slot A in the face of the frame plate A. The ridge D is considerably narrower than the slot A, and is'arranged di-- agonally on the face of the latch D (see Fig. 5) so that the ridge does not prevent the swinging of the latch but limits the stroke of its upward and downward swinging motion. T-wo ridges are provided on opposite faces of the latch, for right or left hand gates.

It will'be seen that by the arrangement described, the latch D can be readily adjusted up or down on the frame plate A, without changing the position of the latter on the gate B. x

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the attaching plate or case, and a stationary or non-sliding pivot adj ustably mounted thereon, with a swinging latch pivoting on said pivot, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination of the latch casing having a slotted front end, and a vertically adjustable transverse stationary or non-sliding pivot bolt in the casing, with a latchpivoting on said bolt and extending through said slot, substantially as shown and described.

4. A gate latch, comprising a frame plate formed with diverging recesses and a dovetail in its face, a stirrup at the front end of the frame plate, a cap fitted at its top and bottom in the said diverging recesses, the said cap also engaging the stirrup on the frame plate, a bolt engaging the said dovetail in the frame plate and extending through a slot in the said cap, and a latch engaged by the said bolt, substantially as shown and described.

5. A gate latch, comprising a frame plate formed with diverging recesses and a dovetail in its face, a stirrup at the front end of the frame plate, a cap fitted at its top and bottom in the said diverging recesses, the said cap also engaging the stirrup on the frame plate, a bolt engaging the said dove-tail in the frame plate and extending through a slot in to abuton the outer face of the said cap, substantially as shown and described.

6. The combination with the casing plate having an undercut slot or dovetail enlarged at one end, and the slotted cap plate, of the bolt having its head entered into the said slot or dovetail through its enlarged end; the threaded end of the bolt extending through the slot in the cap plate and provided with a nut by which it may be held in its adjusted position and also hold the two parts of the casing together, and a latch pivoting on the bolt, substantially as shown and described.

7. The latch D having a handle D at one end, a pivot aperture between its ends and the inclined stop ribs or lugs D D on its opposite sides and intersected by said aperture, substantially as set forth.

8. The combination with a latch casing having a slotted back plate and a slotted cap, of a pivot bolt adjustable in said slots and securing the two parts of the casing together, and a swinging latch pivoting on the bolt, substantially as set forth.
