To all whom t may concern.-

Be it known that LMARKS SAMUELS, a 'citi-v 'zen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, of which the following isa specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in folding beds the invention consisting in the novel features of construction set forth in the following specication and claim and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the bed closed or folded. The letters A B indicate the folding bed frame sections. The non-folding, stationary main frame or section A stands upright and may be closed, but for ventilation it is preferable to leave said back open, suitable strips or cross pieces C being applied at intervals along the back for giving the requisite strength. At the sides along the bottom of section A are also strips D for giving strength and nish.

The section A has suitable sockets or seats into which can be slipped the studs or pivots E of section B so that the latter section can suitably swing or fold.

The foot or free end of section B has legs F secured to a cross piece or plank G jointed to section B at H and when the section B is downV or open the legs swing ont to support the foot of said section B. The legs are held in their supporting position by a brace K jointed to plank G at I and locking against an end or edge of the fixed or rigid bottom L of section B, (Fig. 4.) This bottom L is made to terminate some distance from the free end or foot of section B, said lock or brace K pressing its free end against the edge of bottom L to hold the legs F in supporting position. When the device isl closed or folded the brace K is slipped or swung 0F bottom L and into the space between the edge of said 'bottoni-and the foot of section B (Fig. 3) so as Vto beV housed or concealed. The cross plank G covers the space between end of bottom L and the foot of section B when the latter is closed.

The lower side'parts of section A where the pivots E are located are made t-o project forward some distance so that the bed is lengthened without the sections A B standing excessively high when the device is closed, and the section B has panels or strips M made to project or ange beyond the edges of section B and made to conform to lthe front edges of section A so that when the device is closed the panels or anges M will set closely tothe front edges of section A (Fig. 2) to conceal joints or seams.

The section By has a foot board N secured to arms O jointed at P to section B so that the foot board N can be swung from the position shown in Fig.'4 into section B (Fig. )v when the latter is to be closed.

To the cross piece Q in section B is secured one end of a flexible bottom R, the other end thereof being secured to a cross piece C by a suitable holder or fastening such as a cross piece S and bolts T. Intermediate its ends the iiexible bed bottom R is secured to a cross piece U forming part of a frame, the side parts or strips V of the frame being fixed or bolted at W W to the section B. The ends of the strips V being thickened at the parts receiving said bolts or fastenings W, said ends will be sufficiently strong for securing lirm connection, and they portions of strips V extending from fastenings W toward cross piece U being somewhat thinned, and being left free or unfastened, Ysaid cross piece U will be elastically or yieldingly supported so as to give to the weight of a body on the flexible bottom.

The section B has cut out-portions forming lugs or projections X under which extend the ends of cross piece U projecting beyond the side strips V. These lugs or stops X prevent the cross piece U rising above or out of the section B but `allow said cross piece with the exible bottom to yield to a weight on the latter. The cross piece U to which IOO the flexible bottom is secured keeps that part of said flexible .bottom` between said icross piece U and cross piece Q permanently stretched, as Well when the section B is open as when it is closed.

To the section B at Y are jointed links Z and to the section A at a are jointed links b,- said links being jointed to one another at c. One of the links carries a cross piece d provided with springs e. When the bed is open (Fig. 4) the links are raised or swung up so that the springs c support the headpartof the iiexible bottom. What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
