OIL-CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 530,207, dated December 4, 1894.
Application filed November 13, 1893. Serial No.490fl53- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERNANDO B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ganton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cans; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the can. Fig. 2 is a detached view of one of the vertical Wires. Fig. 3 is a view showing a portion of the glass globe or jar, illustrating the depression for receiving the hooked end of the bail or handle. Fig. 4 is a view showing a portion of the globe or jar, and the position of one of the vertical wires, with reference to the top retaining band. Fig. 5 is a view of a portion of the globe or jar, illustrating the vertical depressions for receiving the top or upper ends of the vertical wires, and showing the depression to receive the hooked end of the bail or handle. Fig. 6 is a view showing a strip or portion of the globe or jar, illus trating the depressions for receiving the bottom and upper ends of the vertical wires.v
Fig. 7 is a horizontal section of the top or upper band and the top or upper part of the globe or jar.
The present invention 'has relation to oil cans, and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlugs.
In the accompanying drawings A represents the glass globe or jar, which maybe substantially of the form shown in Fig. l and may be of any desired size or shape, reference being had to the difierent attachments belonging to the oil can proper, and is preferably formed of glass. To the top or upper end of the globe A is attached the metallic spout a, and the cap-plate b. The globe or jar A is provided with the depressions or grooves c, which depressions or grooves, are
located upon the periphery of the globe or jar A, and are for the purpose of receiving and assisting in holding the vertical wires 01 in proper position. The vertical wires (1 are placed around the globe'or jar A substanstantially as illustrated in Fig. l, and are held to the globe or jar A, by means of the annular bands B and C, said bands being located substantially as shown in Fig. 1. To the band B is attached the handle D.
For the purpose of providing a means for allowing the hooked ends (1' to move with the handle D, the depressions f are formed upon opposite sides of the globe or jar A, near the top or upper end of said globe or jar A.
, For the purpose of holding the band B in proper position upon the globe or jar A, the flange or rib g is formed upon the top or upper end of the globe or jar A. For the purpose of holding theband C in proper position the ribs h are provided, which ribs hold said band in proper position without use of cement. For the purpose of holding the metal cap I) upon the flange b said flange is pro-' Vided with the groove b which groove is for the purpose of holding a sufficient amount of cement to securely unite the cap I) to said flange b.
It will be understood that by my peculiar arrangement and manner of attaching the vertical wires d, that no solder is required'to unite the wires to the bands B and O. For the purpose of assisting in holding the wires (1 in' proper position and at the same time protecting the globe or jar A the band In is provided, which band is seated into notches in formed in the wires d.
By providing the metal bands B and ,G, and locating them at the ends of the globe A, said globe will be protected from injury. By providing the grooves c and locating them at the ends of the globe, and upon its periphery, they will be in proper position to receive the ends of the vertical wires d, and by providing the vertical wires (1 with the notches 0, the band will beheld in proper position, and at the same time assist in stiifening the wires d, which wires and bands form a skeleton around the globe.
