OIL-CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,7 63, dated February 26, 1895.
A plication filed August 27, 1894. Serial No. 521,373. (No model.)
Zo all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, FERNANDO PLSMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ganton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1, is a side elevation of the can. Fig. 2, is a view showing the location and arrangement of the bottom or lower ends of the bars, and their disks. Fig. 3, is a section through line 00 6, Fig. 2. Fig. 4, is a detached view of one of the'loar retaining disks. Fig. 5, is a bottom or under side view of the nozzle cap, and its dilferent parts. Fig. 6, is a sectional View on line y y, Fig. 5. Fig. 7, is a detached view of the nozzle cap. Fig. 8, is a longitudinal section of the globe casing or skeleton. Fig. 9, is a detached view of the globe. Fig. 10, is a view of the nozzle cap.
The present invention has relation to oil cans, and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the globe or jar, which is preferably formed of glass,' and of the form shown in the drawings, and may be of any desired size, reference being had to the size of the can designed to be constructed.
For the purpose of protecting the globe or jar and at the same time providing a means for handling the can proper themetallic hands a, a" and a are provided, which metallic bands are located and arranged substantially as shown in Figs. 1 and 8. To the metallic hands a, a and a are attached in any convenient and well known manner, the metallic bars or strips 1), which metallic strips are extended a short distance below the metallic strips b, are securely attached together as hereinafter described. For the purpose of providing a means forsecurely attaching the lower ends of the strips 1) together, the disks or plates 0 and c are provided, which disks 'or plates are held together by means of the rivet d, or its equivalent. The disk 0 is provided with the radial grooves e, which radial grooves are preferably pressed or stamped in the disk, said grooves being for the purpose of providing openings to receive the inner ends of the bars b.
It will be understood that by extending the bars b a short distance below the bottom of the can proper or jar, and curving said bars a base will be provided for the can proper.
To the top or upper end of the can is attached the nozzle and filling cap B, which may be substantially of the form shown, and as shown it is provided with the nozzlef, and the screw-threaded flange g, which screw-threaded flange receives the screw-threaded cap 9.
To the cap B is pivotally attached the rockbar It, by means of the cross-bar h or its equivalent. To one end of the rock-bar h, is attached the valve is, which valve is so located and arranged that when the can is in an upright position it will close the outlet aperture is. To the opposite end of the rock-bar is attached the head 10 which head is so located and arranged that when the can is in an upright position, it will be received into the socket or recess 0, which socket or recess is provided with the vent aperture 10 It will be understood that in order to cause the valve to descend as the can is brought into an upright position, said valve should have sufiicient weight to descend by gravity.
It will be understood that by providing the weighted valve k, as the can is tilted the rock-bar it will rock upon its pivotal attachments, thereby causing the valve to be removed away from the outlet aperture 7c, which provides for theflow of oil. As the valvekleaves the aperture 7c, the head 10 will become detached from its socket or recess, thereby opening the vent k and allowing atmospheric pressure uponthe oil contained in the can and causing the oil to flow freely.
For the purpose of providing a means-for transporting and operating the can proper, the handle D is provided, which handle may be substantially of the form shown in the drawings, and as shown it is attached to the bands a and a.
For the purpose of better uniting the different parts forming the skeleton or frame located around the globe or jar, said parts are properly tinned after they have been placed in proper relative position.
It will be understood that by my peculiar arrangement of bending or curving the bottom or lower ends of the metallic bars I), and uniting their ends together substantially as described a spring bottom will be provided, by which arrangement the globe or jar is protected from breakage inasmuch as a cushioned or spring action is formed.
Having fully described myinvention,what I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is=
1. The combination of the globe or jar A, having attached thereto the bands a, a and a the vertical bars Z) secured to the bands and extended below the bottom of the jar, having bent or curved portions, the disks 0 and 0' secured together, and the disk 0 provided with the radial grooves e, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the globe or jar A, having attached at its top or upper end the cap B, provided with the nozzlef, and the screw-threaded flange g, the cross-bar h provided with the rock-bar h, having attached at one end thereof the valve 70, and at the other end thereof the head 70 located below the socket or recess 0, having the vent 70 and the aperture 70', substantially as and for the purpose specified.
