PIERRE JOSEPH CHARLES CARRON, OF PONT-DE-CIJAIX-ISERE, FRANCE.
BRUSH FOR DYNAlVlO-ELECTRIC 'WHACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 530,088, dated December 4, 1894.
Application led February 10,1894. Serial No. 499,732. (No model.) Patented in France April 22, 1893, No. 229,554. and in England January 16,1894,No. 993.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, PIERRE .TosEPH CHARLES CARRON, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing in Pont-de-ClaiX-Isre, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes for Dynamo- Electric Machines, (for which patents have been granted to me in France, No. 229,554, dated April 22, 1893, and in Great Britain, No. 993, dated January 16, 1894,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of commutator brushes wherein, on a basis of wire gauze, some form of carbon is applied.
IThe object is to provide a brush having the wlre gauze skeleton, first thoroughly coated and impregnated with a plastic material composed mainly of plumbago, then folded into a flat form, and then wrapped about with the end iiap of the material which `will be cemented fast. The brush may then be consolidated and compressed.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my improved brush.
Figure 1 is a transverse section, showing the manner of forming itby folding and wrapping; and Fig. 2 a side elevation.
In-carrying out my invention I take a strip of wire gauze, a, and coat it with a plastic material, b, composed of plumbago powder and some liquid adhesive material such as gum-lac dissolved in alcohol or other solvent, or with india-rubber or other varnish, or siccative oils, or any kind of suitable glue or adhesive materials. The important point is to form a sort of plumbago paint with which the gauze is painted on both sides and its interstices filled. The coating is then dried. Or the wire gauze may be first coated with the adhesive medium andthe plumbago sprinkled thereon. Materials rendered fluid or viscid by heat, such as sulphur, resin, or the like may be mixed with the plunibago and applied. The coated strip of gauze is now folded as shown in Fig. 1, that is back and forth, in a zig-zag fashion, one fold on another, until the desired thickness is attained. when the last end or flap of the gauze is Wrapped about the folds so as to enwrap and inclose them and the free edge secured by means of glue, c, or an india-rubber solution, or the like.
Having thus describedy my invention, I claim- Abrush for an electrical machine comprising a sheet of wire gauze, d, coated and impregnated with a paint b, composed of plumbago and an adhesive substance, the said coated sheet having its main portion arranged in zig-zag folds and its outer portion Wrapped about the folded portion and its free end secured, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PIERRE JOSEPH CHARLES CARRON.`
