To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. J ARMIN, a citizen of theUnited States,residing at Corpus Christi, in the county of Nueces and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns, of which the following is a specification.

class covered by my Letters Patent No. 522,062, dated June 26, 1894, and has for its object to simplify the construction of said patented device and provide a more convenient and readily actuated means for retaining the chimney upon the base of the lantern.

The invention consists of a lantern having a base to which is pivoted a main-bail which is of such length as to extend above the crown of the chimney placed within the same upon the base, said bail having hinged thereto a handle-bail for the purpose of carrying the lantern and the upper portions of the side wires of said main-bail forming guides for a retaining-device or wire, which at its outer ends is constructed with eyes to receive said side wires, the retaining-device being normally pressed downward by means of spiral-springs coiled around said side-wires below the eyes to which the handle-bail is hinged.

Referring to the drawings, B represents the base of my improved lantern, which is of circular form, provided with a downwardly-projecting circumferential flange b, and at its center with a raised circular portion b onto which is soldered or otherwise secured the central candle-socket 12 The base is preferably made of an integral piece of sheetmetal which is struck or bent up in the form shown. The raised portion b corresponds in shape and size to the lower part of the chimney or globe A, and the chimney is retained thereon in the manner to be hereinafter described. The candle-socket b may have a vertical slot 19 at one side, which is adapted to receive an implement for the purpose of removing the candle or a stump if desired.

This invention relates to a lantern of that tions 0 of the main-bail being formed with eyes G which receive the eyes d of a U- shaped wire handle-bail D. The upper portions G of the side-wires of said main-bail are formed parallel with each other, while the lower portions of said side wires diverge slightly outward so as to span the bulging portion of the chimney. The object in arranging the upper portions 0 of the side wires parallel is for the purpose of forming guides for a retaining-device or wire E which at its outer ends is provided with eyes e through which said side-wires pass. The said eyes 6 are formed by a number of spiral coils at the ends of the retaining-device, said coils being arranged closely together. By means of spiral springs F which are coiled around the guide portions 0 of the side-wires, (said springs being arranged between the eyes (3 of the main-bail and the eyes e of the retaining-device,) the retaining-device is normally pressed downward so that it is caused to engage in any diametrically opposite pair of notches a which are formed in the crown of the chimney A. It will be'observed that by, resting the palm of the hand upon the bridge 0 a purchase may be obtained, so that one or more fingers may be utilized to engage under and press upwardly against the retain ing-device and overcome the action of the spiral springs, thereby releasing the retaining-device from the chimney and enabling the same to be removedso that the candle such as g may be conveniently lighted.

The advantages of my improved lantern are as follows: first, it can be manufactured very cheaply for the reason that the base is stamped out of one integral piece ofsheetmetal; second, the whole device, without the chimney, can be stored in a very small compass by arranging the base B in line with the main-bail C; third, the retaining-device which is held on the main-bail may be very conveniently manipulated by means of one hand, so that the same may be disengaged from the chimney and may as readily be engaged with the same, so as to lock the chimney quickly in position after the candle has been lighted.

I do not desire to limit myself to the providingofa basewitha candle-socket as shown, as it is evident Without particular illustration that the base may be so constructed as to provide means for holding an oil-fount.

Having thus described my invention, 1

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a lantern the combination of a base adapted to support a chimney thereon, a bail attached to said base and extending above the chimney, and a spring-actuated bar adapted to slide vertically on opposite arms of said bail and extending transversely across the top of the chimney, serving to automatically clamp said chimney and leave its top 30 open, substantially as described.

2. In a lantern, the combination of a base adapted to support a chimney thereon, a bail attached to said base and extending above the chimney, a cross bar extending across the 3 5 chimney and provided with eyes adapted to slide on said bail, and spiral springs interposed between the top of said bail and said cross bar for pressing the latter on the chimney top.
