UNITED STATES PATENT- OFFioE.
CAREY F. KIZERAND SAMUEL N. MURDOOK, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
NOISELESS SLAT'E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters .Patent No. 529,867, dated November 27,1894;
Application filed September 1, 1894- Serial No. 521,922. (No model.)
To 0055 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, CAREY F. KIZER and SAMUEL N. MURDOOK, citizens of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a. certain new and useful Improvement in Noiseless Slates, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to the improvement of school slates and the objects of our invention are to provide a noiseless slate of this class of superior construction which will present an effective writing surface and which will be exceedingly durable. These objects we accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a face view of our improved 7 slate and Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section on line 00 a: of Fig. 1.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
(1 represents the slate or writing plate which is formed of the desired thickness of paper or paper-board or suitable fibrous material. The slate body is provided with smooth writing surfaces which are coated and suitably treated to produce thereon a slate finish on which the ordinary slate pencil may be used.
In order to provide a noiseless and nonbreakable frame for the slate body herein described, we provide on opposite sides of the slate body marginal frame pieces of paper or paper-board b, said frame strips being secured to said body in such manner as to cause their outer edges to project beyond the edges of the slate body and result in the formation of an edge channel or groove 0 about the slate. As indicated in the drawings, these grooves are adapted to partially receive a binding cord which passes entirely about the frame and serves to form a pliable beaded edge (1. This cord is glued or otherwise firmly secured in its place-within the frame groove and at the point where its ends meet at the middleof one end of the slate, we provide a substantially U-shaped clasp e of suitable material which embraces opposite sides of the slate frame and cord and which is secured firmly to the frame.- This clasp is provided on its outer side with a suitable suspension ring f by means of which the slate may be suspended if desired.
It is evident that although the side and end frame pieces are herein shown as formed separate'from the slate body, said frame portions might be raised from the slate body and formed integral therewith. I
From the construction and arrangement of parts which we have herein described, it will be seen that a substantially noiseless slate is produced the parts of which cannot be made to rattle and which will withstand comparatively rough usage without breakage.
In the construction of our improved slate both the body and frame are coated or surfaced with a suitable water-proof material which will render the same impervious to the action of water which may be used for cleaning the same.
Our improved slate may be produced, as will readily be seen, in a neat and desirable form and. in varying sizes at a reasonable cost of manufacture.
Having now fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a noiseless slate the combination with the slate body formed of paper or its equivalent and being provided with a waterproof writing surface, of a frame therefor consisting of oppositely arranged frame strips which project beyond the edges of the slate body,
said frame strips being formed of paper or its equivalent and a pliable cord surrounding said frame and bearing partially within the channels between said frame strips, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
