Description

(No'ModeL) J BOYLE. CANDLE EX-TINGUISHER.
No. 529,107. Patented Nov. 13, 1894.
WITNESSES: INVENTOR 7 BY ATTlNl-IY UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
JAMES BOYLE, OF WARE, MASSACHUSETTS.
CANDLE-EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,1Q7, dated November 13,1 894. Application filed October 19, 1893. Serial No. 488,567. (No model.)
do all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES BOYLE, of Ware, 7
bodying my improvement, and then point out the novel features in a claim.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a side view of a candle extinguisher embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is asectional side view of a portion of the same.
7 Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts 'in both figures.
A designates a rod or pole, which may be made of wood or other material, in one piece, or of several pieces joined together. It is provided with a grooved or tubular portion a, capable of either constituting or accommodating a conduit for air. It provided with a tubular portion, it may constitute a conduit, but if only grooved, it may serve merely to accommodate a conduit, consisting of a straight tube of metal, rubber or other material. At one end, this pole or rod is provided with a handle a, and at the other with an extinguisher a Near the handle end, the pole or rod is provided with a pump B, which may be made in the form of a rubber ball, for forcing air through the air conduit. The extinguisher a may be made of metal or lava, such as is used for gas burner tips. Its orifice will be suitably shaped, to project theair into the candle flame. For instance,it may be a simple slit. Near the extinguisher end, the pole or rod is provided with a rest or steadiment- C, which may consist of a fork of metal or other suitable material, properly shaped to bear against the candle, at the proper point to, maintain the extinguisher orifice in proper relation to the tip of the candle.
By my improvement, I produce a simple, cheap and efficient extinguisher for candles, which is superior to one made in the form of a snufier, because it is less apt to injure the candles, and, moreover, it will not take from the candles any of the melted Wax or other material, snufters being particularly liable to this action, which almost invariably results in conducting the melted material on to sur rounding objects to their injury.
Besides the cleanliness which may be attained, by the use of my improvement, it may be operated more expeditiously than the ordinary snutt'er.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of a pole or rod provided with an air duct, of an extinguisher communicating with the air duct and provided with an orifice for projecting the air upon the candle, and a rest arranged upon the pole or rod near the extinguisher end for bearing against a candle, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES BOYLE. WVitnesses:
