UNITED ASTAT-Es PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS F. BOWER, OF UPPER SANDUSKY, OHIO.V
VEH ICLE-TONGU E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,106, dated November 13, 1894.
Application filed April 12, 1894. Serial No. 507,285. (No model.) y
and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Attaching Tongues to Vehicles or Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in means for attaching tongues to vehicles or machines, and has for its object to provide means for readily and quickly attaching or detaching a tongue and supporting it at varying elevations.
NVith these and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the several parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed. v
In the drawings:-Figure l is a perspective view of the tongue embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the tongue, which is constructed of any preferred material, but for all purposes, malleable iron or steel is found to be the best material. The tongue is supplied with a rear coupler 2 for attachment to the vehicle or machine and at one side in advance of the coupler is attached a brace 3 having a hook 4 to hold the tongue straight. The tongue is also supplied with a lever 5 which is operated to lock the coupler closed. Onthe upper portion of the tongue is adj ustably attached a rod 6, which extends from a sliding arm 7 and has its front end bent at a right angle, as at 8 and is supplied with a slide 9, which slips over the wood and holds the rod in place. In taking out the tongue, the slide is raised and unhooked and at the same time, the lever controlling the coupler is raised or unhooked and the tongueis turned and moved outwardly. tongue maybe readily placed in position and the rod can also be adjusted to regulate the elevation of the tongue.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is The combination with a tongue, of a coupler having a clamping lever, a sliding'arm adjustably mounted in the said tongue, and havingl a series of openings therein, means for securing the said sliding arm in its adjusted position, a rod adj ustably engaging the openings in said sliding arm, and braces at- By reversing the operation the tached to the opposite side of the tongue, substantially as and for the purposes specified. In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib-
