'WAGON POLE SUPPORT.
(Application filed July 81, 1900.
(No Model.)
JOHN F. WHITMAN, OF BELVIDERE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM SEWELL, OF SAME PLACE.
WAGON-POLE SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 671,076, dated April 2, 1901.
Application filed July 31, 1900. gerial No. 25,473. (No model.)
To wZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. WHITMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belvidere, in the county of Boone and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Pole Supports, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to construct a wagon-pole support in which a spring has an adj list-able connection with the front axle of the wagon and the forward end of the spring made lengthwise adjustable.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a section of axle and pole of a wagon to which my improved spring is connected. Fig. 2 is an isometrical representation of the plate secured to the axle. Fig. 3 is an lsometrical representation of the bracket, which has a pivotal connection with the plate. Fig. 4 is an isometrical representation of the extension secured to the free end of the spring.
To the axle 1 of the wagon is pivotally connected the pole 2 in the usual manner.
2g To the front face of the axle is secured a plate 3 by bolts 4, passing through the lugs 5 and axle. From the front face of the plate extend ears 6, having a central perforation. The main portion of the plate has a depend- 0 ing projection 7. A bracket has a pivotal connection with the plate 3 by the bolt 8. The bracket has two extensions 9 and ,10. The former has depending side flanges 11, and the latter supports a set-screw 12. This set-screw 55 is adapted to rest against the face of the projection 7 of the plate 3.
A curved spring 13, consisting of a series of leaves, has one end located against the surface of the extension 9 and between the de- 0 pending side flanges 11 and connected to the extension by the bolt 14 and clip 15. The side flanges prevent lateral movement of the spring.
To the free end of the spring is adjustably 5 connected an extension 16, having a cockeye 1'7 pivoted to its free end and its sides having turned-down edges 18, embracing the sides of the spring, and its rear end provided with lugs 19, turned against the under face of the spring. The extension has a series of holes 20, which are adapted to receive the bolt 21, thereby connecting the extension to the spring in an adjustable manner.
To the upper face of the tongue is secured a hook 22, to which the cockeye is connected.
In use the spring has one end connected to the axle and its other end connected to the tongue. The tongue is supported in an elevated position, and by means of the set-screw 12 the tongue can be held at any elevation and the spring adapted to support tongues of different weights.
I claim as my invention- 1. A wagon-tongue support consisting of a plate having perforated ears and a depending projection, a bracket located between the ears and having a perforation, a bolt passing through the perforations thereby connecting the bracket and plate in a pivotal manner, a screw supported by the bracket and resting against the projection of the plate, the bracket having depending side plates, a spring located between the side plate and connected to the bracket.
2. A wagon-tongue support consisting of a plate having perforated ears and a depending projection, a bracket located between the ears havinga perforation, a bolt passing through the perforations thereby connecting the bracket and plate in a pivotal manner, a screw supported by the bracket and resting against the projection of the plate, the bracket having depending side plates, a spring located between the side plate and connected to the bracket, and an adjustable extension secured to the free end of the spring.
JOHN F. WHITMAN.
