JOHN A. BUSSERT, OF MACOMB, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF PART OF HIS RIGHT TO JAMES S. MOOLINTOOK, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT INTONGUE- SUPPORTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 173,894, dated February 22, 1876; application filed August 16, 1515. a
.To all whom it may concern: i
Be it known that I, JOHN A. BUSSERT, of Macomb, in the county of McDonough and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tongue-Supporters; and
f I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification.
The object ofthis invention is to support the tongue of any kind of wagon or carriage, and
keep the weight 011' of the animals necks, and to allow the necessary vibration of the tongue when running over extremely uneven roads;
tongue, in which A represents the tongue, B
the axle-tree, to which the hounds 0 0 are attached, between which the tongueA is placed inthe usual manner, to which, on the under side, is attached by suitable bearings, i and e, the rod n, which is provided with a spiral spring, 8, and nut, d. t represents a plate, which is attached to the axle-tree B. The spiral spring 8 is placed over the rod a, one end resting against the bearing 0, the other back against the nut 61. The rear end of the rod n is slightly curved, and extends back against the plate t. The front end extends through the bearing e for the purpose of allowing the spring to be lengthened. The nut 01 is for the purpose of tightening up the spring 3.
The operatioinis as follows: The spring 8 pressing against the bearing 0 presses the rod u back against the plate t sutiiciently to raise the point of the tongue and keep it up in about the usual position, thereby keeping the weight 011' of the animals necks. By means of the slots in the bearing 6 the tongue is allowed to vibrate sufficient] y to allow the wheels to run over uneven roads. In extremely uneven roads the rear end of the rod ncan slide up or down, as the case may be, on the plate t, which will give extra vibration to the tongue.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the-plate t and slotted bearin g i with the curved rod it, provided with the spiral springsandnut d, as described, and for the purpose specified.
JOHN A. BUSSERT. Witnesses:
