RUBBER HAND-STAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 528,583,` dated November 6, 1894.

Be it known that we, SAMUEL DUDLEY AR- NOLD, JOHN BARNEY VENKER, and WILLIAM LAWRENCE BARNARD, citizens of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rubber IIandStarnps; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide van improved stamp for printing on uneven surfaces having letters or characters mounted on an elastic rubber body supported by a similar body of elastic material with elastic rubber pins, capable of being securely at.- tached by use of adhesive material to the body of the stamp, said pins being separated suflciently to allow the air to circulate around them so as to dry the adhesive material, or liquid, with which they are fastened to the body of the stamp; the pins however, to be close enough together to afford ample support to the body which rests on the pins from both sides.
To this end the invention consists in the specific details of construction hereinafter more fully described and claimed and as illustrated in the drawings, wherein- Figure l-is a side view of a stamp with our elastic rubber pins attached. Fig. 2is a face View of elastic rubber body showing the position of pins on the same. Fig. 3--is a sectional view showing the position of the elastic pins; the rubber body of which they are a part, and also the piece on which the letters or characters are and the body of the stamp.
Referring to the said drawings, the letter A designates the body of the stamp B, that part on which are the mounted characters, t'. e., the type base. This rests on a body of similar material E a part of which are the integral pins D shownin Figs. l, 2 and 3. The body E is connected with the base B, on which are the mounted characters through the use of suitable adhesive material and the pins D are connected to the body of the stamp A by like substance. The elastic rubber pins D are larger where they connect with the body of the stampA as shown at F, Fig. 3. This is also gives opportunity for the cement on ally the pins, those in the center as well as outwardly from it, to become equally and as rapidly tenacious in its hold upon the body A.
These pins D, which may be made in any shape or size described, are preferably arranged in squares as shown in Fig. 2 and the elastic material, or sheets E, can be cut in such shapes as the requirements of the trade demand for stamps of dierent sizes; and in so cutting the sheet E, the pinsD will not be separated therefrom (even though the cut passes directly through the pins) because they are integral therewith.
When the stamp is complete and ready for use and is pressed on uneven surfaces the elastic pins D are compressed or shortened on that portion of the surface, which ishigher than the other, thus allowing that portion of the face of the stamp, where the characters or letters are, which is opposite the lower portion of the body or surface being pressed to reach it and continue theimpression from thehigher surface.
What is claimed as new is As an improved article of manufacture, a hand stamp having its letters or characters mounted upon a flexible type base, a Iiexible sheet secured to the type base and having elastic pins integral therewith and projecting from the upper face of the sheet, said pins being enlarged at their upper ends, and a body to which the enlarged portions of the pins are cemented, substantially as described.
