D.U.STONER. SHUTTER HINGE.
No. 528,571. Patented Nov. 6, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID U. STONE R, OF MOUNT JOY, PENNYSYLVANIA.
SHUTTER-HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 528,571, dated November 6, 1894.
Application filed October 13, 1893. Serial No. 488,042- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID U. STONER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Joy, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutter-Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hinges for shutters and similar swinging devices, and has for its object to provide simple and elfective means for holding the shutter or other device at a desired adjustment for the purpose of bowing the same.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the several parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the window frame and a shutter showing the improved hinge applied thereto Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the parts of the hinge separated and shown on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a part of. one of the members.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views. Y
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates the male member of the hinge which is stationary and attached to the window frame 2. The said male member has an arm 3 projecting outwardly therefrom with a pintle or post 4, extending upwardly with an incline 5, in front thereof and a recess or slot 6, at the opposite side, one of whose walls is formed by a vertically extending beveled lug 7. From the outer lower end of the said arm and extending inwardlyis a semicircular incline 8, which is formed with diagonally disposed locking notches 9, in the upper edge of the same adjacent to the inner end. The incline of the said semi-circle has its highest point adjacent to the inner end of the arm aforesaid and extends downwardly toward the outer end of said arm.
To the shutter is secured the female member of the hinge which is provided with socket 10, fitting over the post or pintle on the arm of the male member, and having an outer lug 11, and an inner incline 12, which co-acts with the parts of the said arm and is a well known construction in the art. The socket and other parts of the female member are carried by an arm extension 13, and adjacent to the securing leaf 14, of said female member is a depending lug 15 which is arranged diagonally or at an angle and has its lower edge clear to engage the notches in the upper edge of the semi-circular incline heretofore set forth. In the operation of bowing the shutter, the latter is opened until the said lug 15 moves around upon the semicircular incline and drops into the desired notch .where it finds its bearing and properly holds the shutter at the angle required. The position of the shutter can be readily changed by merely pushing the latter open and shut and in all instances an automatic hinge is provided which is comparatively cheap and is required to be located at the bottom of the shutter only.
The device can be quickly and readily manufactured and it will be understood that changes in the dimensions or proportions of the same might be made and substituted for those shown and described without in the least departing from the nature or spirit of the invention. I
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1 An automatic locking hinge composed of a male member having a central arm extending therefrom carrying a pintle, and having reverse inclineson opposite sides of the pintle, a semicircular rim uniting the leaf of the hinge and-the extended arm provided with notches, and a female member having inclines working on the inclines of the male member and a downward extending lug riding on the semicircular rim and engaging the notches thereon, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
D. R. Wzumnn, J OHN R. GREINER.
