FASTENER FOR MEETING-RAILS OF SASHES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 528,108, dated October 23, 1894.

To a/ZZ whom t may concern.-

- Be itknown that we, JAMES PAUL and JOHN THOMSON PAUL, lamp-manufacturers, subjects of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland,both of Grove Works, Edinburgh, in the county of Midlothian,North Britain, have in* vented a new or Improved Sash-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to a new or improved fastener or catch for windows and other'like purposes, by means of which certain advantages are obtained. f

In the drawings,-Figure lis a side View o our improvements showing the upper sash of` the window lowered. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the two sashes locked together. Fig. 3 is a plan of Fig. 2.

In carrying our invention into practice we attach to the lower rail A of the upper sash by means of a Ilange or base plate B or other convenient device a box or frame C,in or upon which is a hinged boltD maintained in its normal position by a spring E and adapt ed to operate in the manner hereinafter described. t

To the upper rail F of the lower, sash we attach by means of a flange or base plate G or the like a somewhat similar box or frame H adapted when the window `is closed to fit over or clasp the box or frame C. To the box or frame H We hinge or otherwise attach a lever I or other releasing device, Whose function will be presently described.

The action of ourinvention is as follows:- As will be seen from Fig. 1 the two boxes C and H are so fixed to their respective sashes A and F that in the act of closing the window the two boxes approach one another in a vertical line until when the window is shut the inner box C will be nested within the outer box H. The bolt D of the inner box C normally protrudes beyond that part thereof which rests within the outer box H. As the outer box H passes over the inner box C the bolt D is thereby pressed inward against the action of the spring E until-when the window is shut the head of the bolt D clears the top of the outer box H and is forced outward by its spring E over the said box H and retains the two boxes C and H, and consequently the two sashes locked together as seen more particularly in Fig. 2.

When it is desired to open the window the lever I or other releasing device is brought into action. It is moved by means of the cord J or by the hand so as to press the head of the bolt inward or in such direction as to free it from the outer box H. The Vwindow may then be opened in the usual manner either by raising the lower sash F, when the outer boxH will rise over the inner one C, or by lowering the upper sash A, when the inner box C will descend from within the outer on e.

We claim- In 'a window fastener, thecombination of the boxes C and H adapted to fit one within :the other, the box C being provided with a Witnesses:
