To all whom t may consent.-
Beit known that I, JOHN L. CARPENTER, of Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vises; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in vises; and it consists inthe novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of the vise. Fig. 2 is a similar View of a p0rtion of the same, showing the nut in a lowered position. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the nut holding device.
The object of my invention is to provide a quick action vise which may be moved either way longitudinallyindependent of the screw mechanism, and a further object is to provide an improved means for breaking the screw connection.
A is the base of the vise and B the stationary j aw extended vertically therefrom. This jaw is recessed in the usual manner and extended therethrough is arm C carrying at its outer end the movable jaw D. Within the` arm C is the longitudinal screw E which is suitably journaled and carriesat its outer end the operating pin F.
Beneath the screw and adapted to engage therewith is the nut G, semicrcular and screw threaded at its upper end, and at its lower end provided with the shank H which depends through recess I in base A. This recess communicates with the longitudinal recess J which leads to the outer edge of the base, and movable in recess J is wedge K upon which the shank ofthe nut rests as shown. The wedge is constructed with an` outwardly extending stem L which is broken and pivoted together at M, while at its outer end it is screw threaded upon which is run the nut N. The outer end of the spring bears against the stop J and serves to hold the wedge normally in an inwardly extended position beneath the nut. The nut N may be `worked either way as the tension of the spring may require.
l/Vhen the movable jaw is to be adjusted a considerable distance, and it is desired to save the time which would be required to adjust the same by the screw, the nut G is lowered by withdrawing wedge K as shown iu Fig. 2 when the movable portion of the vise may be positioned as desired. The wedge is held withdrawn by breaking the joint M in stem L as shown, so as to lodge end M of the stem section against the outer side lof the base, thus preventing the spring from acting. As soon as the vise has been adjusted the stem is straightened and the wedge returned beneath the nut G by the spring.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

movable jaw, a screw for adjusting the latter, a nut which the screw engages, a Wedge for holding the nut in said engagement, a stem projecting from the Wedge, a spring coiled about the stem which engages the Wedge at one end and the stop J at its opposite end, and a means for holding the stem and Wedge Withdrawn, substantially as shown and described.
5. In an improved vise, a base constructed with recesses I, and J, a xed jaw, a movable jaw, a screw for adjusting the latter, a nut for engaging the screw, a Wedge for holding the nut in said engagement, a stem extending from said wedge which is screw threaded at its outer end, a nut adjustable thereon for the purpose stated, and a spring encircling the stem for holding the Wedge normally beneath the nut, substantially as shown and described.

It is hereby certified that Letters Patent No. 528,074, granted October 23, 1894, upon the application of John L. Carpenter, oi' Auburn, New York, for an improvement in Vises were erroneously issued to said Carpenter as sole owner of che invention; that said Letters Patent should have been issued to said John L. Carpenter and Walter M. Harris, of same place, each being owner of one-half interest, as shown by the record of assignments in this office; and that said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the ease in the Patent Office.
