CHUCK OR VISE.
To all 107mm t may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES H. Sarrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norfolk, in` the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia7 have invented new and useful mprovementsin Chucks or Vises, ofk which the following is a specification.
This invention relates Ato improvements in chucks or visesk such as are commonly used on planers, milling inachines,` shapers and other like machines,y the object of the invention being to provide" an improved chuck or vise which embodies in its construction jaw plates by means of which the work may be forced downwardly as well asv sidevvise. i
' The invention consists in the construction7 combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a chuckor vise constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a planof the saine. l? ig. 3 is a detail sectional view on a larger scale and yon the plane indicatedv by the line c-a of Fig. 2. Figs. are detail views.
The chuck body or vise bodyl is mounted cna degree base 2 for pivotal movement and comprises a pair of arms 3which are connected together at one end by a xed jaw 4- and at the other end by a bearing 5. A. sliding jaw 6 is mounted on the arms 3 for movement toward and from the fixed jaw; the gib plates of the lsliding jaw beingindicated at 7. A screw 8 for operating the sliding jaw rhas a step bearing Yin the xed aw and is also swivelly vinounte'd'asfat 9 in the bearing 5. A set screw 10 is mounted as at 11 and is arranged for engagement with the degree base to hold the chuck or vise atany desired angular adjustment.
ln accordance with inv invention each jaw is provided on its inner side with upper and lower inclined plane faces 1213 which are parallel and is also provided with a flange or shoulder 14- wliicli is horizontal and which together with the inclined plane faces extend from end to end of the j aw. The inclined plane faces of the j a ws converge upwardly as shown. Each jaw is also provided on its inner side with a groove 15 which extends from end to end thereof, which is rectangular in cross section and is at right .angles to the inclined plane face 13. VJhen the key` plates are moved downwardly on the jaws fthe space between them is increased and when theyI are moved upwardly the space between them is diminished as will be understood. The upper portion' of each 'key f' plate is provided with inclined guide bores 25 which register and aline with the guide bores 16 of the jaw and guidepins 26 are arranged in said guide bores and serve to connect the key plates to the fjaws as will be understood. Each key plate also has a groove 27 in its outer side which corresponds with the groove 15 of the jaw and' extends from end to end'of key plate aiidfat the center' of each key plate is a substan! tially seiniicircular recess 23 which inter-- sects the groove 27.
A linkt bar 29 connects each key plate to one of the Jaws and is arranged in the grooves 15 and'27. vEach link bar is coextensive in length with the jaws and key plate and isshaped cross sectionally as shown, and passes through a siniilarlv shaped opening 30 in the center of the fulcrum head 3l of a lever bar 32. Said fulcruin heads are seated in the recesses 2S and said lever bars extend through the recesses 19 and are arranged at the lower ends of the vertical bores 17 and are each provided with a threaded'opeiiing 33. Set screws 34 secure the lever bars to the link bars and are arranged with their heads in clearance openings 35 with which the key plates are provided. Operating screws 36 are ai? ranged in the bores 17, bear at their lower ends at the bottoms of said bores and also of the recesses 19, engage the threaded openings 33 of the lever bars 32 and have their i upper ends arranged in the central boresy of sleeve plugs 37 which are screwed into the threaded upper ends of the bores 17. Coiled springs 3S are arranged in the said bores and around said operating screws and bear between the lower ends of the sleeve plugs and the upper side of the levers 32.
The springs exert their tension to normally depress the outer ends of the lever bars and cause the latter to slightly turn the link bars so that the link bars serve to normally raise the key plate. The tension of the springs is such that while they normally hold the key plate raised they enable the key plates to be forced downwardly if suflicient pressure be applied, as when work is being held tightly between the key plates. When, for set gage work it may be desired to set one or both of the key plates in its lowered position this can be accomplished by turning the screws 86 in the required-direction to lift the free ends of the lever bars 32. In practice the bores of the sleeve plugs are of somewhat greater diameter than the screws 2S to permit the required slight angular movement of said screws with the lever bars. Hence the chuck or device can be used or converted into a common or regular chuck or vise at will. At all adjustments of the key plate their opposing faces are perfectly parallel. 'Y
While I have herein shown and `described a preferred form of my invention I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit ofthe invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1; In a device of the class described a pair of aws arranged for movement toward and from each other and provided with inclined opposing upwardly converging faces and key plates having inclined faces corresponding with and engaging those of the jaws and having vertical parallel opposing faces, and
means to raise and lower the key plates, on the jaws.
2. In a device of the class described a jaw having a plane inclined face, a key plate having a vertical work engaging face and an inclined face engaging that of the jaw, a link bar mounted for angular movement in grooves in the opposing sides of the jaw and key plate7 a lever bar connected to said link bar and means to operate said lever bar whereby to raise and lower the said key plate.
3. In a device of the class described a jaw having a plane inclined face a key plate having a vertical work engaging face and an inclined face engaging that of the jaw, a link bar mounted for angular movement 1n grooves in the opposing sides of the jaw and key plate, a lever bar connected to said link bar, a spring exerting its tension on the lever bar to normally cause said lever bar and link bar to raise the key plate and a screw to move the lever bar against the tension of the spring andthereby lower the key plate.

In a device of the class described a jaw having a planelv inclined face a key plate having a vertical work engaging face and an inclined face engaging that of the jaw, a link bar mounted for angular movement in grooves in the opposing sides of the jaw and key plate,.a lever bar connected to said link bar, a spring exerting its tension on the lever bar to normally cause said lever bar and link bar to raise the key plate and a screw to move the lever bar against the tension of the spring and thereby lowerfthe key plate, said jaw having a recess in which the lever bar operates and also having a bore communicating with said recess and in which the spring and the adjusting screw are arranged7 and a plug sleeve in the upper end of said bore and forming a guide for the adjusting screw.
