SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0,528,038, dated October 23, 1894.

Be it known that I, LOUIS S. SHAUER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new andusefnl Improvements in Trousers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in trousers, and while it is applicable to-almost any kind of trousers, yet it is more especially adaptedto that class of such garments worn by athletes, such as bicyclists, base ball players, &c., and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement, and operation of the various parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.

The objects of my inventionare, first, to provide a simple and inexpensive device, which can be easily and readily attached to trousers of any description,and will produce a snug fit around the waistg'and second, such a device, which by reason of its elasticity will cause the trousers to fit closely and conform to the contour of the waist or abdomen under the varying postures of the body, and will obviate the necessity of employing suspenders tosupport the trousers, yet will so fit the wearer, as to cause no inconvenience or uncomfortableness.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a front perspective view of the upper portion of a pair of trousers, embodying my, invention. Fig. 2, is a rear perspective view of a portion of a pair of trousers, showing my invention applied thereto and illustrating a modification in the same, and Fig. 3, is a perspective view of the adjusting belt, detached frolnthe trousers.

The ends of the straps E, are provided with buckles F, or clasps F, for uniting them together, and may also be supplied with an adjusting slide G, the use of which is so well known in shortening or lengthening suspenders, that itis not deemed necessary to fully describe the same herein.

In Fig. 2, of the drawings, I have shown a modification in the form of the recesses or cut-away parts at the top of the side-seams 0f the legs of the trousers, which consists in forming the bottom of the recesses or cutaway parts B, slightly forwardlyinclined, as at b, which construction will render a better fit of the trousers to a muscular person or one who is fleshy, forthe reason that the recesses containing the elastic pieces 0, will fit over the hip-bones of the wearer, and as the muscles or flesh protrude or extend dowm wardly and rearwardly from the upper portion of the hip-bones, it is obvious that by forming the recesses with the inclined bottom 19, it will allow the elastic pieces C, to stretch in the difierent contortions of the body, without causing the same to wrinkle or pncker. This result is also attained by employing recesses, which are of substantially the same width at their top and bottom, as is shown in both Figs. 1, and 2, of the drawlugs.

The operation of my device is simple and as follows: The straps E, are placed within the pockets D, and the elastic pieces 0, are secured within the recesses or cut-away parts, when the straps may be secured together, at the front of the trousers, by means of the clasp F, and adj usted to the size of the waist, by means of the buckle F, at the rear portion of the waist of the trousers.

Within these pock ICO This arrangement will permit of the Waist of the trousers being tightened to anydegree, and as the belt rests on the body of the wearer just above the hip-bon es, it is obvious that it will prevent the trousers slipping down, thus obviating the necessity of the use of suspenders. It is also apparent that by reason of the elastic pieces 0, and the straps E, forming the belt, which are passed through the circumferential pockets D, will uniformly support the waist band of the trousers, and prevent it puckering or forming into wrinkles, which would be uncomfortable to the wearer and under active exercise would irritate the flesh.

Instead of forming the straps E, entirely of elastic material, I may make the front portion thereof of leather or other non-elastic material a, and attain substantially the same result as above set forth. In some instances I may also dispense with the circumferential pockets D, and attach the straps E, composing the belt, which may be made entirely of elastic material or partly so, as shown in Fig.

3, to the upper portion of the trousers, in which position it will assume the functions of the waist-band. When so used however, the elastic pieces 0, will be secured within the re cesses or cut-away parts B, as before stated.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As an improved article of manufacture, a pair of trousers having at the top of the side seams thereof a recess or cut-away part of substantially the same width at its top and bottom, a circumferential pocket on each side of each of said cut-away parts, an elastic piece secured in the recesses or cut-away parts, and straps passed through the pockets and attached to said elastic pieces and pro vided at their ends with means for adjustably securing them togethensubstantially as described.
