Description

MoRToN JUDD, or NEw BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
sAsH-EAsTENEE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 5,279, dated September 4, 1847.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, MoRToN J UDI),v of New Britain, I-Iartford county, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Fastening Window-Sash, which is described as follows, reference being had to the annexed drawings of the same, making part of this specication.
The apparatus containing my inventions and improvements consists in a plate -A with a convex segment rib B on its outer edge to be attached to the top bar C of the lower sash, and combining the same with a horizontal turning catch D, turning on a vertical 'axis E, having a groove in the under side of the same corresponding with the shape of the aforesaid segment rib B which fits in the said groove when the catch is turned so as to bring it in contact therewith. Said axis E being arranged in the center (longitudinally) of a metallic box F fastened to the lower bar Gr of the upper sashsaid box having three of its sides Inade solid and the ends solid or inserted and soldered fast or brazed-the side next the segment rib being open-the ends of which are closed by two blocks having jogs or offsets on the inner sides thereof, against which are placed the two ends of a straight spring bar I-I arranged between the catch and the back of the box for the purpose of holding the catch in the position in which it is placed, either engaged with, or disengaged from, the aforesaid segment ribthe e'nd of the catch being iuted, or otherwise made and brought in contact with the spring bar at the middle thereof the two ends of said spring bar being allowed to move simultaneously toward or from the center as it is expanded or oontracted by the operation of the turning catch-the bar moving back andforth over ment plate being also placed equdistant fromthe center of the axle so that the catch maybe connected with or disengaged fromv the same by turning or moving it to the right a or to the left on its axis a half circle or to any degree required.
. What I claim as my invention and desire screws, the catch being thus placed in the center of the box answers thedouble purpose of securing the spring to its place without the expense of fastening it in the usual way together with the convenience of fastening or unfastening the window by turning the catch either to the right or left-fasteners constructed in this way 'can be made of sheet metal whereby they can be afforded at one quarter less expense than the ordinary way of casting, and are Inuchstronger, not
being mortised for the binding screws that confine the spring to the box and the spring being placed loosely in the box.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name before two witnessesthis twenty-fourth day of April, A. D. 1847.
