Description
Ntra STATES PATENT errori.
WILLIAM W. WINTER, OF COR-TLANDVILLE, NEV YORK, ASSIGNOR IO HIMSELF AND STEPHEN BREWER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVED APPARATUS FOR DRIVING METAL 0R WOOD INTO THE GROUND.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 52,799, dated February 20, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. WINTER, of Gortlandville, in the county of Cortland and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Driving Apparatus for Driving Rods, either of Metal or Wood, into the Ground, and also for drilling, and especially useful for driving rods and tubing in the construction ol pipe or tube wells; and Iv'do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and accurate description of the construction and operation of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention consists of a weight or driver made of wood, stone, or metal, having a hole through the center, through which the rod or pipe to be driven passes, said rod or pipe, when started into the ground a short distance, proving a sufficient support and guide of the weight while operating the same. To the top, or at any other desired elevation on the rod or tube, is fastened, by a clamp or otherwise, a pulley, over which a cord attached tothe weight passes and hangs down within convenient reach of the person Who is driving. A strong adjustable metal clamp is securely fastened onto the rod or tube (at a shoulder made thereon, if necessary) for the weight to fall upon when driving. The pulley can be unscrewed from its clamp and screwed into a Wooden plug in the top of the pipe in case that position should at any time be found more convenient.
In the accompanying drawings, Arepresents the rod or tube to be driven; B, the Weight or driver; C, the pulley and clamp connected therewith 5 D, the cord, and Ethe strong metal clamp on which the weight falls.
To enable others to make and use Inyinvention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I make my weight of the material before mentioned and of any desired gravity. The rod or tube to be drivenl I rst put through the hole in the weight (the cord being adjusted over the pulley) and start it into the ground by making a hole a few feet with a crowbar. It is then capable of supporting and guiding the weight. I so adjust the cord as to hang down within convenient reach of the person operating the weight. I now securely fasten the clamp on which the weight falls to the rod or tube, and the apparatus is ready for driving. I now raise the weight as high as desired by pulling down upon the cord, and let it fall upon the clamp by quickly throwing up rny hands, but not letting go of the cord, and continue this process, adjusting said clam p higher up on the rod or tube as the latter is driven into the ground.
What I claim as my invention, and desir to secure by Letters Patent, is-
-A driving apparatus constructed in such a manner that the weight or driver is supported and guided by the rod or tube to be driven, and also the application of the pulley thereto, all substantially as herein shown and described.
WM. VV..WINTER.
