Letters Patent No. 86,081, dated Jaw/amy 19, 1869.
IMPRO'V'ED FENCE-BUILDER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of thelme the county of'Licking, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fence-Builder 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,y
and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, like letters designating like parts in all the figures, in which-` Figure lis a side elevation;
Figure 2 is a front elevation of that part of the maf chine used for setting the posts;
Figure 3 is a vertical section of the axle-box for the same; r
Figure 4 is a front elevation of a section of fence and the apparatus for holding the rails or boards in position while being fastened; and
Figure 5 is a cross-section of the same, taken in the line x of fig. 4.
The nature of my invention' consists'in the arrangement oi' amachine for making post-holes, setting the posts,and holding the boards or rails in their proper position -while they are being fastened to the posts.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use 'my invention, l will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the drawings- A represents thel horizontal frame o'r base of that portion of the machine for making the post-holes and setting the posts.
B B, the vertical uprights, which are pivoted to the frame A.
0 (l are^crosspieces between the uprights B B.
Between the cross-pieces G- O is a pulley, a, overwhch passes the rope b, which is connected to the rammer D.
On each side of the frame A are secured braces, E E, as seen in fig. 1.
To theoutside of the uprights B B are secured blocks c c, which it over the braces E E.
In the blocks c c are set-screws d d, by means oi" which the uprights B B are held to the braces E E.
The above-described frame, 85o., rests upon wheels F, the axles of which are held in boxes G, in the top of which are set-screws e, by which the altitude of the frame on the wheels can be adjusted.
H represents -a sharp-pointed tool used for making the post-holes, the pointof which is covered with steel or iron.
I represents the upright posts of the frame, to which is attached the apparatus for holding the boards or rails in their proper position' against the posts while they are being secured thereto.
J represents` the boards or rails of 'a fence.
j, pins or nails driven into the posts I, suitable length being left outside for the boards or rails to rest upon.
Above them, on one side of the posts I, is secured any desired number of levers, g, which are pivoted, near their centres, to the posts I, the ends of which, next to the sides of the posts where the pins or nails f are placed, extend out beyond the posts, the thickness of the boards or rails, and are turned downward, forming alatch, which holds the boards or rails to the posts.
To the rear ends of these levers is attached a rope or cord, h, which extendsflownward, and -passes under a pulley, t', thence upward, and is fastened to one end of a lever, j, which is pivoted to the post I near its upper end.
Its operation is asfollows:
The sharp tool H is placed upright at the place where it is desired to make the post-hole, and the machine is then moved up until the rammer D is directly over it, and the said rammer D (which slides freely between the upright posts B B) is allowed to fall, thus, by .its weight, driving the tool H into the ground, and forming the post-hole.
The chain attached to the tool Vis then hooked to the rammer D, which is then raised, and draws with it the said tool. j
The post is then placed in the hole, and driven fast into the ground by blows from the rammer D.
-It'is desirable that the posts B B should always be plumb; and in case the machine should be used on a side-hill, when the frame A would not be horizontal, by loosening the set-screws cl in'theblock c, the posts B can be adjusted as desired, and the screws then' tightened, which will hold them iirrnly to the braces E E.
Where the ground is uneven, the position of the machine can also be regulated by means of the adjustable wheels in the boxes G.
After the posts have been set in position, `and it is desired to put on the boards or rails, the upright posts I I are placed in the proper position to receive the boards or rails.
When in position to receive the boards or rails, the levers are in the position shown in the red elines in fr 5.
gThe boards or rails are then placed on the pins f, and the levers g are then brought down on top of the boards, as shown in iig'. 5.
After the boards are nailed to the posts, and it is desired to remove the machine, the levers g are released from their hold on the boards by drawing down the lever j, which pulls the rope or oord h, thuis raising the levers g, and the machine can then be removed.

What I claim, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is'
l. The wheels F, with their adjustable bearings, attached to the frame A of the fence-builder, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the adjustable parts B B and wheels F, in a fence-builder, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The mechanism for holding in position-fence boards or rails, when constructed substantially in the manner shown and described.
