HOTEL-EGISTER.
.SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 526,581, dated September 25, 1894.
Application filed May 8,1894. Serial No. 510,480. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID F. RIEGLE, of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hotel-Registers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in hotel registers, or any other book which is adapted for public display or public use.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims. 1
Referenceis to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a perspective view of a book. bound in accordance with the invention, the said book being open and the binding being projected beyond the side edges of the leaves. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. l,in which the cover is projected beyond both the sides and top and bottom edges of the book leaves. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the book closed, in which the projecting portions of the cover or binding are constructed to fold outward it' desired; and Fig. 4 is a partial transverse section, taken practically on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3, illustrating the adaptation of a transparen-t material as a face for the inner or outer surfaces of the backs of the cover of a book or both.
In carrying out this invention, the pages A to be written upon, or which may contain printed matter of any kind, are bound within a book back B, which back may be of any suitable or approved material, and is provided with the usual side squares B. The binding may be accomplished in the usual manner, but the novelty of the invention consists primarily in making the squares B of the book of greater area than the leaves of said book,-
C of the squares of the cover are adapted to contain advertisements, upon either the inner or squares of the cover by means of a hinge of any approved character as illustrated in Fig. 3, in which event when the book is filled and is to b e filed away the extensions of the binding may be readily severed from the body, thus reducing the space necessary for the storing of the book.
It will be understood that advertisements may be produced upon the outer faces of the extension of the squares of the book in like manner and in like location as upon the inner faces of the extension. By this means whenever a book is opened the inside advertisements are prominently displayed, the outer ones being in View when the book is closed, and they may be very artistically exe-` cuted, and the advertisements need not be placed upon the blotters of hotel registers as heretofore, and when the blotters are dispensed with between the leaves of the register, a greater number of leaves adapted for actual use may be contained in the same bulk than when blotters are employed.
Any form of blotter, a detachable one, for example, may be used in the hotel register bound in accordance with this invention; or a blotter may be bound between each two leaves if parties so desire. Furthermore it will be observed that the extended margins of the book binding squares will serve to protect the bound portions of the book. It will also be understood that a cover of, the character above described may be applied to any book adapted for public display or use.
In order that the advertisements shall be protected from wear incident to the opening and closing of the book, the said advertisements may be and preferably are covered with a transparent material E, such as mica for example, this material being securedto the cover either by being introduced in pockets therein, or by being cemented to the cover, tacked, or otherwise applied.
IOO
Having thus described my invention, I a hotel registeror like book having its covers claim as new and desire to secure by Letters provided beyond the leaves with severably Patenthinged extensions containing transparently 1. As an improved article of manufacture, covered advertising panels, whereby when the t5 5 a hotel register or like book provided beyond book is to be filed away the extension may be its leaves with severably hinged extensions severedtherefrom, substantially as described. Ahaving exposed advertising panels, whereby when the book is to be iled away said exten. DAVID F. RIEGLE. sions may be severed therefrom, substantially Witnesses: 1o as described. L. O. IvEs,
2. As an improved article of manufacture, JERRY KESSLER.
