SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 526,280, dated September 18, 1894. Application iiled March 29, 1894. Serial No. 505,574. (No model.)
To all wiz/0m it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES F. WICKLAND, of Fremont, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a pencil-attachment, the primary object being to provide an eraser and knife-blade-holder at the end of a pencil, and to construct said holder in two parts, the one part being adapted to telescope or iit within the other and carrying the eraser and knife-blade at opposite ends respectively, and the other or receiving-part having sufficient length to receive the knifeblade and blade-bearing-end of the knifeblade-carrying-member.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1, 2 and 3, are elevations of a pencil provided with my improved attachment, portions being broken away and in section to reduce the size of the figures and to more clearly show the construction.
My improved pencil attachment involves two parts or members A and B, member A being tubular and adapted to be mounted or slipped upon the end of the pencil and member B being provided with a cutting-blade C and an eraser D at opposite ends, respectively, and adapted to be held within and actuated endwise of member A. Member B of the pencil attachment illustrated in Figs. l and 2 is reversible end for end-that is, either end thereof is adapted to be inserted into member A; hence, as the knife-blade is called into requisition the eraser-bearing-end of member B is inserted into member A, and, if the eraser is to be used, the blade-bearing end is inserted into member A.
The tubular or receiving-member A of my improved attachment has such length that it will not only accommodate the mounting of it upon the end of the pencil, but will also accommodate the reception of both the knifeof notches a a2 blade and knife-bearing-end of member B when the knife-blade is unemployed.
Member B of my improved attachment may simply be capable of being slid into member A, as shown in Fig. 2; or, it may be externallyscrew-threaded at opposite ends, as at l), to engage corresponding threads internally of member A, as shown in Fig. l; or, if desired, member A may be elongated as shown in Fig. 8, wherein member B is located within and adapted to slide endwise of member A, and wherein each end of the member A is adapted to be slipped or mounted upon the end of the pencil, and wherein the blade and eraser borne by member B are adapted to be exposed at opposite ends of member A, respectively. In the construction illustrated in Fig. 3, the blade of the eraser is exposed for` service according as member B is slid in the one direction or the other, part B being actuated by means of an external pin or lug b projecting laterally from said part and en gaging a longitudinal slot a in member A, the length of said slot being such as to accommodate the required sliding-movement of member B, and part A is provided with two notches, a', d2, in open relation with slot a and located such a distance apart that notch a', or notch a2, shall be adapted to be engaged by pin or projection b on member B according as part B is actuated into the one or the other of its two adjustments, pin or member b when opposite either one of said notches being adapted to be brought into engagement with the respective notch by turning part B somewhat laterally, and the size is preferably such relative to the thickness of pin or member b that said notches shall be adapted to be tightly engaged by member b, so that part B shall be held in the desired adjustment.
A pencil-attachment consisting of a tubular or hollow member adapted to be connected to the end of a pencil, and aknife-blade and eraser-bearing member adapted to engage the tubular or hollow member internally, the knife-blade and eraser being located at opof the supporting-member, respectively, the latter being adapted to be actuated so as to expose the eraser or the knife-blade as desired, and the tubular or receiving-member having suiicient length to accommodate the reception of the knife-blade of the blade and erasing-bearing member, substantially as set forth.
