ACCOUNT-KEEPING DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 526,194, dated September 18, 1894.

Be it known that I, ERNEST MCCULLEY, of Houston, 1n the county of Texas and State of 1 Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Account-Keeping Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in account keeping devices and particularly to thatkind of devices which are adapted for use 1n keeping bank balances. In carrying along the balances of individual depositors,

errors are likely to arise because the balances get farther and farther from the names of the depositors and, besides the danger of makin g an error, much time is lost in tracing and enteringthe balances.

. The object of my invention is to produce an extremely simple device, which is constructed and arranged in such a manner that the names ofthe depositors are exhibited in such a way as to be quickly read and also to balances of a depositor, and which has its various parts arranged in such a way as to be easily removed or placed in position.

To these ends my invention consists of certain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device Fig. 2 is a cross section of the same. Fig. 3 is a broken detail longitudinal section, showing the arrangement of the paper rolls. Fig. 4 is a detail side elevation of one of the keepers used in fastening the name cards and paper strips. Fig. 5 is a broken perspective view of the guide keeper used in connection with the paper strips; and Fig. 6 is a detail side elevation of lone of the spring catches used in fastening the name cards and strips.

The device is provided withthe main case 310, which is preferably rectangular and which has on the top, near one edge, a groove 11 to enable the fingers to be placed so as to confveniently grasp the name cards 12, which are arranged parallel with each other at right angles to the groove 11 and on the case top, these cards serving to receive the names of the individual depositors. The ends of the name cards next the groove 11 are held in place by the keeper 13, and similar keepers are used on the paper strips to be hereinafter described. This keeper consists of a wire long enough to extend lengthwise across the case 10, and it has brads let adapted to be pushed into the case top to hold it in place, and short spurs which project between the name cards and between the paper strips to be hereinafter referred to, but if desired, these spurs may be made of the same length as the brads 14. p

The inner ends of the name cards are held ,in place by a keeper 13 and by the brads 15 on the springs 16, which springs serve as catches to hold the cards and also the paper strips to be presently described, each spring having brads lo at its opposite ends and having also a central bend 17 through which the fastening screws 18 or equivalent devices extend, these being used to fasten the spring to the case top, as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2.

The brads lo at one end of the springs 16, project downward through holes 18 in the guide keeper 19 which extends longitudinally on the case top parallel with the keepers 13, and this has end lugs 20 to be driven into the case top and guide lugs 21 on its under side, between which the paper strips 22 pass. These strips 22 are for the purpose of having the balances written upon them, and each strip'is held within the case in the form of a roll 23, and the rolls are held in a thin box 24 which is placed within the case beneath the springs 16 and it has a longitudinal slot25 through which the strips pass and they also pass upward through a slot 26 in in the case top, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, and from this slot beneath the guide keeper 19 and over the case top to the right, being held flat thereon by keepers 13 so that the balances may be easily entered on them. The several rolls are separated bypartitions 27. See Fig. 3.

The case has a top groove 11 at its extreme right so that the strips 22 may be conveniently grasped and pulled out when the balance is to be changed. By reference to Fig. 1 it will be seen that the balances may be entered opposite the part marked A, so that they will align with the names on the cards 12 and be so near the cards that no error is likely to arise in reading them.

When a new balance is to be entered, the strip 22 is pulled along so as to bring the old balance opposite the part B and the new balance is entered opposite the part marked A, andthus both can be seen. The brads 15 of the springs holds the name cards and paper strips firmly, and when either is to be moved the springs 16 are lifted so as to release them. To enable the box 24 to be easily placed in position or removed, the case is provided on the inner side with a door 28.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that the names of the depositors and their balances may be very conveniently.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1'. A deviceof the kind described, comprising a fiat topped case having finger grooves on its top side and near opposite edges, a series of detachable name cards held near one edge with one of their ends extending to one of said grooves, a series of springcatches arranged on the case and adapted to engage the name cards, a series of paper strips held within the case and adapted to project'over the top and opposite the name cards with their free ends adjacent to the other finger groove, and means for fastening the paper strips, substantially as described.

2. A device of the kind described, comprising a flat topped case, a series of detachable name cards held on one. side of the case, a series of paper strips held within the case and projecting upward through it near the center,

and a series of spring catches arranged between the paper strips and the name cards and adapted to hold both in place, substantially as described.

3. A device of the kind described, comprising a flat topped case, a series of name cards arranged thereon, a series of paper strips held within the case and projecting outward through a slot therein, the strips being arranged to align with the name card, keepers to hold. the name cards and strips in place, and spring catches arranged between the name cards and strips, the catches being fastened at the center and having their end portions provided with brads to engage the name .cards and strips, substantially as described.

4. The combination, with the slotted case and the name cards thereon, of the removable slotted box within the case and having a series of compartments each having a slot registering with the corresponding slot in the case, the rolls of paper strips held in the box,

the strips being adapted to project through the slots in the box and case, fastening de vices on top of the case to hold the strips in place and name-card holders on top of the case at the opposite side of its slot from the strip fastenings, substantially as described.
