Description

lUNrrnn TATES PATENT Finca@ IMPROVED STIRRUP.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 52,589, dated February 13, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BARAK T. NICHOLS, ot' the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stirrups and Felt Vebbing for Reins and Girths; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part ot this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of my said stirrup with the stirrup leather or strap passing through the same; Fig. 2, a View ot' the bottom of the stirrup without the strap 5 Fig. 3, a perspective view of the felt webbing for reins, with the leather straps ateach end to fasten into the buckles at the bridle, and Fig.
, 4 a perspective view of the felt girth withV the leather chapes and buckles sewed on at each end of the same.
In the drawings, A is the stirrup, and B the leather stirrup-strap, which passes through the stirrup, as shown in Fig. l.
The openings for the stra-p to pass through and thence over the ends ot' the stirrup are clearly shown in Fig. 2.
The stirrup may be made of wood or metal, and may be variously shaped and formed, finished, and ornamented, all, however, without changing the character or principle of my said invention, the object and intention ot' which is to form the stirrup of one piece ot' wood, metal, or other suitable material, shaped and perforated to receive the stirrup-strap, and to form the tread for the foot of the rider,`sub stantially as shown at A, Figs. 1 and 2.
In Fig. 3, A is a narrow strip ot Wool material, felted stronglyvand compactly together, and of strength and thickness suitable for use for webbing for harness or bridle-reins, or for any other purpose for which woven webbing is now applied. B B are leather straps sewed onto the webbing A.
In Fig. 4, A is also a strip of wool material, felted stronglyr and compactly together, and shaped, by means of the leather chapes B B sewed onto the ends thereof, into the form ot' a saddle or harness girth, the same being so made, shaped, and combined as to answer the same purpose at less cost and to better advantage' than the woven or leather girths now in common use.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot' the United States, is-
The stirrup A, Figs. l and 2, substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
BARAK T. NICHOLS.
