llilllllllllallnllllllll-lll rlllllI-ILIIIIIOIIIIIIIAIIII UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE JAMES L. CAMPBELL, OF MONTICELLO, GEORGIA.v
BACK-BAN D.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,128, dated November 7, 1893.
Application ledAprl 22,1893. Serial No. 471,445. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES L. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monticello, in the county of Jasper and State ot' Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Back-Bands; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specitication.
The special object of my invention is to make a back band for horses which shall be strong, durable, easy to the animal and convenient in use.
Figure l of the drawings is a plan View of the back band. Fig.v 2 a cross-section on dotted lines :l: and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section of one end on the dotted line y y of Fig. l.
In the drawings, A represents the back band which is formed of seven layers or/thicknesses, the layers B, tive in number being what is known as sail ducking While the two layers C C are made of burlap packing of wool, hair or other suitable material. The layers B are all in one piece and folded of the desired widths with the burlap or equivalent soft packing between the folds. It is then stitched longitudinally with ve seams, four beside the edge seam and preferably at equal distances apart.
D D are two leather strips, one at each end of the band and on the outer face thereof, the said strips being sewed to the band all around the edges so as to form a rectangular endless seam E. To these leather strips D D, I rivet one end ot' a perforated leather strap F which passes through'the loop g of a spring snaphook G and are each arranged in the middle of the strip. This equalizes the strain on the whole Width of the band. The leather is folded around the ends of the band and the end held by the seam E, thus protecting the band ends from abrasion.
The buckle H attached to the strip, under the strap, enables the band to be adjusted to horses of different girth so that the same belly-band may be used on larger or smaller horses.
What I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, a backband made of a single piece of folded duck padded between the folds, stitched longitudinally, and having the ends bound with leather, an adjustable loop and snaphook being secured to the leather and the latter riveted to the duck as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in g Witnesses:
