Description

(No Model.)
0. H. GOULD. COMBINED CIGAR TIP CUTTER. AND ADVERTISING DEVICE.
Patented Aug. 21, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLYDE I-I. GOULD, OF DES MOINES, IOWA, ASSIGNOR TO FRANK G. KIEST,
OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED CIGAR-TIP CUTTER AND ADVERTISING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 524,713, dated August 21, 1894.
Application filed February 24, 1894. Serial No. 501.440. (No model.)
To a, whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLYDE H. GOULD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Des Moines, county of Polk, and State of Iowa, have invented a Combined Cigar-Tip Cutter and Advertising Device, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in the construction,
arrangement and combination with a cigar tip cutter having a lever adapted to be manually operated to move a cutting knife and a roller having its surface adapted to receive advertising matter and be rotated a part of a revolution each time the said lever is operated to cut a cigar tip, as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows the entire device in perspective with parts broken away to show certain details of construction. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Referring to the accompanying drawings the reference letter A indicates the base of the device, and A a frame mounted on said base and adapted to contain all of the operating mechanism and having an opening A therein through which advertising matter may be read. A indicates a series of graduated openings also formed in the frame A adapted to receive the cigar tips to be cut off.
B indicates a knife slidingly mounted beneath the said openings so arranged that when drawn forwardly it will cut off any article inserted in the said openings.
C indicates a rock shaft mounted between the sides of the frame A and arranged to be operated by a lever 0 extended upwardly through a slot 0 in said frame. 0 is a coil spring connected with said shaft to normally hold the lever C in an upward position. 0 indicates an arm fixed to and projecting upwardly from the said rock shaft, and C is a rod connecting the arm C with a knife B.
It will be obvious from the above that when the lever C is depressed, the knife B will be advanced to cut 0E the cigar tips inserted in the openings A in the ordinary manner.
D indicates a roller mounted in bearings in the rear end of the frame A and. having upon its surface a series of spaces upon whichadvertising matter or the like may be placed. D is a ratchet device formed on one end of said roller and having one ratchet tooth for each of said advertising spaces. Findicates a pawl pivotally mounted on the axle of the said roller and adapted to normally engage the said ratchet teeth. Aspring F being interposed between the outer end of said axle and the said pawl, to normally hold the pawl in close engagement with the ratchet face D 11 indicates an arm projecting upwardly from the shaft C, and H is a bar pivotally attached to the said arm and to the pawl F.
J J indicate springs fixed to the inner face of the frame A to engage the end of the roller D opposite from the said ratchet face to apply friction thereto and hold the roller in any position in which it is placed.
K indicates an openingin the bottom of the base covered by a rotatable disk K also provided with an opening adapted to be moved into coincidence with the opening K, and through which the cigar tips may be removed, and K is a partition separating the roller D from the space in which the tips are dropped.
In practical operation it will be obvious that when the lever C is operated, the knife B will be moved so as to be capable of cutting off the cigar tips inserted through the openings A and the roller D will be moved so as to displaya new section of the advertising space on its surface and show a different advertisement each time the said lever is moved.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States therefor, 1s
The combination in an improved cigar tip cutter and advertising device, of a suitable base, a frame thereon provided with an elongated opening in its rear top portion and a number of circular openings of graduated sizes at its top forward portion, a roller extended horizontally and pivotally mounted in the rear of said frame, a plate secured to one end of the said roller and having ratchet teeth formed in its front face, an arm rotatably mounted on the axle of said roller, a detent pivoted to said arm and adapted to engage the said ratchet, a yielding pressure device adapted to hold the detent in engagement with the ratchet, a knife slidingly mounted beneath the circular openings in the frame, a rock shaft mounted in suitable bearings in the forward end portion of the frame, two arms fixed thereto, a connecting rod pivoted to one of said arms and to the arm of the shaft of the roller and a rod connecting the other arm with the said knife blade, a lever THOMAS G. ORWIG.
