UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MORITZ FQRST, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WALKING-CAN E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 524,678, dated August 14, 1894. Application filed March 9, 1894- Serlal No. 502,961. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: I Be it known that I, MORITZ FORST, of New York city, New York, have invented an Improved Walking-Oane, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a walking cane which is slotted beneath the knob to form a chamber, adapted for the reception of a folding fan blade.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is an elevation of my improved walking cane; Fig. 2 a longitudinal section on line 3, 3, Fig. 1, showing the fan blade opened, andFig. 3 a similar section on an enlarged scale with the fan blade closed.
The letter a, represents a walking cane provided at its upper end with a slot a, for the reception of the fan. The two cheeks a, of the cane at the sides of the slot, are engaged on top by the socket b, of the knob or handle b. In this way, the cheeks are connected and are prevented from spreading at their upper ends. Near its lower end, the slot a is traversed by a pin 0', around which the fan blade d is folded. This blade is provided with a pair of rigid side pieces e, which are hinged to a ring 0, that surrounds the cane at the base of the slot. This ring serves also to strengthen the cane at its weakest point, t'. e. at its junction with the cheeks a. The side pieces eycarry-L shaped spring catches e,
adapted to engage either the knob b, or sockets c formed in the body of the cane. When the fan is closed, (Figs. 1 and 3) the blade is confined within the slot and is concealed and protected by the side pieces c. When the fan is opened, the blade forms a circle that extends from side to side of the cane body and may be conveniently used.
What I claim is- The combination of a cane having a transversely extending slot, with an inclosed fan blade, a pair of side pieces e secured thereto and with a ring that surrounds the cane at the base of the slot and to which both side pieces are pivoted, substantially as specified.
