WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MORTON E. CONVERSE, OF WINOHEN DON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BED OR C'RIB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 523,514, dated July 24, 1894.
Application filed March 23, 1894.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORTON E. CONVERSE, a
citizen of the United States, residing in the town of Winchendon, Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Beds or Cribs, of which the following is 'a specification.
My invention relates to beds and cribs.
The object of my invention is to provide a bed or crib which when adjusted will be securely held in position, and which can be folded up and put away when not in use, thereby also furnishing an additional feature of amusement when made for toy purposes, besides enabling a great number thereof to be packed ina smaller space.
My invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts as hereinafter specified and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all figures;
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of abed or crib embodying my improvement. Fig. 2
by several cross-pieces or bars 0, 0, c '0 designates a cross piece or bar fitted into sockets e in the end post thus providing a pivotal point for the head and foot boards. To this cross-piece c is secured by nailsvl or other suitable fastening devices, a downward extension bar 9 which forms the head and foot of the bottom or frame 0 of the bed proper which contains slats Z.
In the example shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the lower sides E of the bed or crib may be fitted into sockets 0 in the downward extension bar y and likewise the top rails q of the side pieces into sockets a" in the posts a a and b b of the head and foot boards A and B.
D designates a locking device consisting of rods s united together by a head or crosspiece T. These rods 8 extend through openings 0 in the cross-pieces c c and into sockets n, in the cross-piece c of the head and foot boards, so that by raising the same, the head and foot boards may turn upon the crosspiece 0 and be lowered or closely folded upon Serial No. 504,882. (No model.)
the bed frame 0 as plainly shown by Fig. 3.- It will be seen that when the rods 8 are inserted into the sockets n in the cross-piece c the head and foot boards will be securely held in upright position relative to the frame or bottom frame 0.
At the top of the head board A of the bed or crib a canopy top or frame U may be arranged. The canopy frame shown consists of two side-pieces is one end of which is secured to a cross bar or piece 01 the ends of which fit into sockets in the posts a a so as to have a rotary movement, and having their outer ends connected by means of a cross rod 11..
The canopy frame may be raised and lowered by means of the cross-piece 01 being journaled in the posts a a and maybe kept extended b the movable stays m secured to the sides It and adapted to engage with the cross-piece c of the head board A.
Referring to Fig. 3 it will be seen that the head and foot boards fold closely upon the upper side of the bottom frame; that'the can opy frame folds between the head board and thebottom frame, and that the sides of the bed or crib fold underneath the bottom frame, and thus it will be obvious that the bed or crib may be folded compactly for the purposes before mentioned. 7
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a bed or crib, the combination with the bottom frame, of the head and foot-boards having a pivotal connection with said bottom frame, and locklng devices comprising a rod or rods earned by and havingsliding connection with the head and foot boards, and
adapted to engage with a socket or sockets in the bottom frame substantially as described. 2. In a bed or crib the combination with the bottom frame, of the head and foot-boards frame and locking devices comprising a rod or rods carried by and having vetically sliding connections with the head and foot-boards and adapted to engage with a socket or sockets in the bottom frame, and side pieces having pivotal connection with the bottom frame and adapted to fold thereunder, and also to engage in sockets formed in the head and footboards substantially as described.
4. In a bed or crib the combination with the bottom frame, of the head and foot-boards having a pivotal connection with said bottom frame and locking devices comprising a rod or rods having sliding connections with the head and foot-boards and adapted to engage with a socket or sockets in the bottom frame and side pieces having pivotal connection with the bottom frame and adapted to fold thereunder, and also to engage in sockets formed in the head and foot-boards, and a 20 folding canopy frame connected to the head board and stays therefor substantially as described.
5. In abed or crib the combination with head and foot boards having the cross pieces of the bottom frame having cross-pieces which said head and foot boards have pivotal connection, and the locking devices each consisting of rods secured together at one end by a cross-
