To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY O. CARTER, of East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Beceptacles for Butter and other Articles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to covers for butter tubs, 850., such as shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States, No. 404,597, granted to me June 4, 1889. In my said invention the movable central part of the cover or wedge-shaped looking tongue is made with straight sides, and the recesses in the tub or receptacle that receive the ends ofsaid looking tongue are also made with straight sides. I have found in practice in consequence of said construction, the cover is not sufficiently locked down in its central part but is liable to rise or spring up in the center and thus to admit air, which deteriorates the goods contained in the receptacle, or permits leakage of fluid contents thereof.

The object'of my present invention is to overcome the said defects, and to provide a means for firmly locking down or securing the central part or looking tongue of the cover, so that the cover cannot rise or become displaced in the center.

The invention consists in constructing .the central wedge-shaped locking tongue of the cover with outwardly -inclined or beveled sides, and in constructing the recesses in the receptacle which receive the said locking tongue with correspondingly inwardly -inclined or undercut sides, so that when the cover is properly placed upon the receptacle and the said tongue driven home, it will firmly secure and hold down the central part of the cover, and prevent the cover from rising or leaking in the center, as will be hereinafter more fully described.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement showing the cover in a closed position on thetub. Fig.2isaperspective view of the cover with parts broken out; and Fig.

3 is a perspective view of the upper end of the tub.

The sectional cover referred to in the patent above mentioned is liable to rise in the center, as the ends of the wedge or middle section are not directly locked in place on the tub itself and are free to rise at their ends in the straight grooves or notches formed in the upper ends of the tub.

The tub A is provided at its upper end with an internal groove or shoulder A, (see Fig. 3,) to receive the edges of the cover sections B, B The wedge or middle section B of the cover, which in my said patent is made with straight or vertical sides, is here made with beveled or outwardly-inclined sides, and is slidably connected with the correspondingly beveled edged side sections B and B by a device 0, shown and described in detail in the patent above referred to, and also illustrated in Fig. 2, so that further description of the same is not deemed necessary. The middle or wedge section B is adapted to engage dovetail grooves A and A formed in the upper end of the tub A directly opposite each other, as shown'in Figs. 2 and 3, the smaller groove A being adapted to receive the smaller end of the wedge section B', while the larger groove A is adapted to receive the base end of the wedge. When the cover is in the position illustrated in Fig. 2, the wedge section B being partly withdrawn, the cover can be readily placed in position on the tub, the edges of the sections B, B fitting into the groove A, and the projecting end of the wedgesection B readily passing into the large dovetail groove A The operator now, in closing the tub, moves the wedge section B inwardly so as to force the side sections B and B apart and in firm contact at their beveled edges with the beveled inner surfaces of the upper part of the tub A and .into the groove A.

At the same time, the small end of the wedge section B passes into and engages the dovetail groove A while the base end snugly fits into the large dovetail groove A and the wedge section is thus prevented from risin The height of the dovetail grooves corresponds to the thickness of the cover B, and the bottoms of the grooves are flush with the top of the shoulder A, so that when the cover is locked in place on the upper end of the tub, then the entire top surface of the tub presents a smooth, even surface; see Fig. 1.

The wedge section B by being fitted into the dovetail grooves A A can be readily withdrawn when opening the tub, as the said wedge section is not liable to bind between the said sections B and B It will further be seen that the wedge section 13, when driven home in closing the cover onto the upper end of the tub has the tendency to draw the cover downward, so as to tightly close the upper end of the tub.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with a receptacle having its open end provided with a croze, and opposite dovetail grooves, which are of different size and located above the croze, of a cover composed of side sections adapted to fit in said croze, and an intermediate wedgeshape section having beveled sides which fit in said grooves, and means for connecting the several sections, whereby the middle one is slidable between the others, yet remains engaged therewith, as shown and described.

2. The combination, with a receptacle, having a croze, and its upper edge grooved or slotted transversely at diametrically opposite points, the sides of the grooves being undercut to form a dovetail, of the sectional cover whose middle or looking section has its end portions beveled to adapt them to fit in the dovetail grooves, and means for holding it in slidable engagement with the side sections, as shown and described.
