Description
UNITED S AT SPATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES L. SHERWOOD, 0F FARIBAULT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD To OsOAR w. BALL, OF RICE COUNTY, MINNESOTA.
COMBINED REFRIGERATOR AND FILTER- SPEGIFIOATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 521,559, dated June 19, 1894.
Application filed November 21, 1893. filerial No. 491,603. (No model.)
To all whom it may concerm.
Be it known that I, OHARLEs L. SHERWOOD; a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Faribault, in the county of Rice and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Refrigerator and Filter; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which-it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a combined refrigerator and water purifier or filter, and has for its Object to provide a device of the character set forth, which is so constructed as to have two separate cold air currents, supplied to two separate compartments, which are divided by a thorough water purifier or filter and forming a partition in the center and between the two compartments.
The invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.-
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the combined device, embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal, vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse, vertical section.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the outside casing which is of any size and shape and is provided with an upper compartment 2 and a lower compartment 3, intermediate of which is a water purifier or filter 4c forming the partition in the center on the lower portion of the refrigerator to form two opposite compartments as fullyshown in Fig. 2. The said filter is so arranged as to support the shelving on each side as at 5 and is provided with a joint 6, just above the lower shelf to thereby divide the filter into two sections. The upper section contains the purifying agencies which consist of a layer of pebbles 7 below which is a layer of pulverized charcoal 8, having a layer 9 of bone black below the same, the said layer of bone-black having below the same another layer 10 of clean sand which rests upon a porous alumition is also provided with a water gage 14,
which is protected by a strong screen 15. The filter and the ice box over the filter, and compartments are lined with sheet aluminum alloy, being non corrosive, and always'free from rust, and will not contaminate the water in contact therewith. The ice rests upon a corrugated rack 16, under which is a water tight pan 17 to receive the melting ice, it being seen that the ice is both used to cool the refrigerator, and after it has melted and returned to liquid state is conducted through the filter, purified, and used for drinking or other purposes, thereby dispensing with the employment of a drain faucet; The said pan has two openings 18 therein, one on each side of the same, above the filter, thus admitting the two cold air currents and also said pan has an opening 19 just over the center of the filter to allow the escape of the water from the melting ice to pass directly into the top of said filter.
The device entire is economical, in saving and utilizing the properties of ice, and it is obviously apparent that many minor changes in the construction and arrangement of the several parts might be made and substituted for those shown and described, without in the least departing from the nature or spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention. what is claimed as new is I 1. In a refrigerator, the combination with tially dividing the interior of the frame of specification in the presence of two subscribsaid refrigerator into two parts or comparting witnesses.
ments and adapted to receive the water from v, 4 D the melting ice, and purify the same for usage, CHARLES SHERWOO 5 thereby dispensing with the use of a drain Witnesses:
spout, substantially as described. ROBERT MEE,
In testimony whereof I have signed this OSCAR W. BALL.
