SUSPENDER'S.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,082, dated June 5, 1894.

Be it known that I, JOSEPH M. BOHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Campbell and State of,Kentucky, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of trousers-suspenders in which the back-portions of the pair of straps comprising them are united by a slide-coupling, the novel features being fully hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims. I

In the accompanying drawings-Figure l is an elevation of the rear ends or back-portions of a pair of pantaloons-suspenders, show-' ing my invention, (in its preferred form,) applied thereto, the upper and fore portions of the suspenders-straps being broken away and omitted, as it is not deemed absolutely necessary to show them herein; and Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the two partially coiled and bent members comprising my strap or web coupling, ready for slidingengagement with each other preparatory to the final mousingbends therein, which latter complete the sideloops for engagement with the clasps on the suspender-webs.

A, A, represent two ordinary straps or webs composing a pair of pantaloons-suspenders.

a, a, are the two lower, back-portions or rear, securing-ends of said straps.

B, B, are clasps made of any suitable ma terial, and each secured (by means of stitching, as shown, or in any other desired manner), to the straps in the angles at the top of said back-portions or divergent, securingends a, a.

O, C, represent a pair of oblong wire-loops, constructed as follows: The inner, vertical limb c, of each one of the pair,'freely engages the loop or eye 1) formed in the outer fold of each clasp, and the outer, vertical limbs c of said pair G, O, are constructed with eyes or spirals D, D, each eye composed of one or more coils made in the wire. The eye or coil D in loop 0 is made so that it shall be about one-third, (less than half,) the distance from the top thereof, and the eye or coil D in loop 0' about the same distance from the bottom or lower end of said loop 0', and both said on the coils, as is obvious.

eyes or coils engage the straight-portions of said outer limbs c, in such a manner, that a verticalslide-connection results, the eye or coil -D in loop 0 engaging the upper straightportion of limb c of loop 0', and the eye D in loop C likewise engaging thelower, straight portion of limb c of loop 0. Thus, the two loops 0, O, are, preferably counterparts of each other and correspond in every particular, one having a closed eye or coil engagement with the other and forming a vertical slide-connection or coupling for the point or angle of union of the two back-portions of the suspenders. A very free and easy slidejointis thus provided at said angle of union, whereby each strap has an independent movement of its own and adapts itself to the movements and peculiarities in the shoulders, and also the fit and hang of the pantaloons, of the wearer. Said eyes or coils being integral with and rigidly constructed in the loops 0, C, a very strong coupling results, and, wherever the outer-limbs c, c, of said loops lie in said coils in their vertical movements, no variation in the strain affects them, nor can said pair of loops become greatly spaced or forced apart at top or bottom to form wide defective gaps, or cause any undue spreading or other strain In Fig. 2, I have shown how the slide-loops are united prior to engagement with the clasps, viz: The lower portion of loop 0 is straight and unbent and disposed pendent, and the upper portion of loop 0' is also straight and unbent and stands upright, the coils in both loops being previously made therein and also the upper bend in loop 0, and the lower bend in loop 0 the said pendent and upright straight-portions, are then set vertically parallel to each other and with their ends in line with said coils D and D, respect ively, when their insertion therein may be readily effected, and then the proper bends are-made in the wire in said pendent and upright straight-portions to complete the mousings and the oblong-loops seen in Fig. 1. The opposite ends of the wire in each loop are brought close together, and the inner limbs c, 0, thus formed, inserted in the folds of the clasps, which, when the clasps are afterward sewed or otherwise secured in place, form suitable bearing-eyes b for the slide-loops, to secure proper swinging-movement therein.

It is obvious, that instead of making the coils or eyes in both loops, one loop could he made perfectly plain or straight in both its inner and outer members 0 and c, and the other loop constructed with two sets of coils or eyes made. in its outer limb or bar 0 and both sets located at the same distance from its upper and lower ends as those seen in Fig. 1, but such form would not be proof against strains, or make as good a slide-connection as the preferred form.

I claiui.-

1. In apairof trousers-suspenders, the combination with the straps or webs A, A, having the customary lower back-portions or divergent securing-ends, of a pair of oblongloops 0 and O, the loop 0 having a coil or eye engaging the straight portion of outer limb c of the loop 0, and the loop 0 having a coil or eye engaging the straight portion of the outer limb c of loop C,and clasps on said straps engaging the limb cof said loops 0, C, Whereby a slide coupling or connection is made in the back of the pair of suspenders, substantially as herein set forth.

2. In a pair of suspenders,a back slide-connection composed of a pair of oblong-loops, each having plain inner limbs c and eyes or spirals D, D, of one or more coils, made in their outer limbs 0', whereby corresponding loops are provided and adapted to engage each other, substantially as herein set forth.

3. In a slide-connection for the rear, divergent ends of suspenders, an oblong-loop having a straight inner longitudinal member or limb 0 adapted to a clasp on one suspender strap or Web and an outer longitudinal memher or vertical bar 0' having one or more spirals made therein and adapted to engage the outer vertical limb or bar of an oblong loop held or mounted in the clasp of the companion web or strap, substantially as specified.
