SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,056, dated June 5, 1894.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN C. STEELMAN, of Linwood, in the county of Atlantic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Oleat, of which the following is a full,

clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to an improvement in cleats, and it has for its object to provide a cleat of simple, durable and economic construction adapted for use wherever the clamping of a rope is required, and a further object of the invention is to provide a cleat which will bite a rope or cable when forced in confact with it in such manner that said rope or cable will be made fast. 4

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the cleat. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section taken practically on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken practically on the line 33 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4c is a similar section taken essentially on the line 4-4. of Fig. 1.

In carrying out the invention the body portion of the cleat consists of a block A, which may be a castingor a forging, or it may be constructed from wood or a like material. The saidbody or block A, is provided with a recess B in one of its ends, and the end in which the said recess is produced may be the thicker end of the said body if in practice it is found desirable.

In forming the recess 13 the floor or lower wall 10 thereof is made tapering from the inner vertical wall of the recess downwardly and outwardly, and the said floor or lower wall is roughened in any approved manner, being preferably provided with a series of longitudinal ribs 11. Furthermore, in forming the said recess side ears 12, are projected down ward from the sides of the outer wall, and between the said ears a clamping or binding jaw 13, is pivoted, the jaw being pivoted near provided with a series of longitudinal ribs 15,

as is shown best in Fig. 4. Y

The extreme rear lower edge of the jaw 13 is provided with a beveled surface 16, and normally the beveled surface 16 of the jaw is made to approach somewhat closely the base or floor 10 of the said recess B, as shown in Fig. 1. The sides of the block or bodyA adjacent to the recess B, are more or less rounded or cylindrical, as shown at 17 in the drawings.

In operation, the rope to be clamped is passed into the recess Bbetween the lower wall 10 thereof and the opposing surface of the jaw 13, and when the rope strikes the rear portion of the jaw the said rear portion is drawn upward, and the forward or central portion of the jaw as the parts meet will bind firmly upon the rope, as shown in Fig. 2, and hold it in clamping engagement with the ribs of the jaw and the ribs of the base wall of the said recess B, and the more the rope is carried rearward the tighter the jaw will automatically act to hold the rope in binding engagement, since the pivot point of the jaw is located between its center and its forward end near its upper surface.-

I-Iaving thus described my invention, I claimas new and desire'to secure by Letters Patent 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a clamp, the same consisting of a body provided with arecess or mouth in one of its ends, the said recess or mouth being provided with an inclined lower roughened wall, and a jaw eccentrically pivoted within the said mouth or recess, provided with a concaved, ribbed lower face, as and for the purpose specified.

2. A cleat, the same consisting of a body or block provided with a mouth or recess in one of its ends, the bottom wall of which is inclined and roughened, and a block-like jaw [O block-like character, eccentricelly pivoted between the ears of the said mouth or recess, the lower face of the said j aw being concnved and roughened and its lower edge shaped to admit of the jaw rocking in an outwardly direction, as and for the purpose specified.
