Description

L. H. KNAPP.
GUY ROPE CABLE CLAMP.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 20,1908.
Patented Apr. 20, 1909;
A TTOHNE Y8 UNITED STAI E S PATENT OFFICE. Y
LOUIS HENRY KNAPP,
OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOROF ONE-THIRD TO WILLIAM E.
JENKINSON, QF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
GUY-ROPEOABLE cLmr.
Application filed July 20,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Louis H. KNAPP, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State'of New York, have invented a new and Improved Guy-Rope-Cable Clam of which the following is a full, clear, an exact description.
At the ends of guy wires or cables, such as used for staying telegraph poles, stacks, etc. it is necessary to form loops by means of which the guy wires or ropes are secured in position.
The object of this invention'is to provide a clamp of simple construction, which can be cuickly applied to clamp the main part of t e cable to the end of the loop.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to he more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawin s forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the'figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective of a clamp constructed according to my invention, and represents the same as forming a loop; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the clamp taken at one side and showin one of the channels which receives the cable, and showing also the seat for the wedge which jams the cable in position; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of one of the wedges, that is, the wedge which cooperates with the side of the device shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a perspective of this wedge; and Fig. 5 is a cross section through the device.
Referring more particularly to the parts, 1 represents the body of the device, which is 'in the form of a block of elongated rectangular sha c. This block is formed with two longitudinally-disposed gutters 2 and 3, which are separated by a artition .wall 4 which extends throu hout t e length of the block. The side we s of the gutters 2 and 3 diver e outwardly toward the lower face of the block, as indicated in Fig. 5, and these faces are formed with grooves 5 which are under-cut so as to present inclinedoverhanging shoulders or wedge seats 6. These wedge seats incline downwardly lon itudinally of the block, .as indicated in Fig. 2. The lowest point of the wedge seat is disposed towar the direction in which the cable Specification of Letters Patent.
I Patented April 20, 1909.
1903. Serial N0. 444,335.
' sectionextends, hence, the wedge seats incline in opposite directions, the depressed end of one being disposed opposite to the elevated end of the other. I
In the bottom of the gutters 2 and 3, rounded channels 7 are formed, which are ada ted to receive the. parts 8 and 8 of the cab e, to form' a loop 9, as indicated in Fig. 1. The cable after being placed in the channels is clamped firmly in osition by wedges 10 and 11. The formo these wedges is very clearly shown in Fig. 4. They are similar in form and in cross section conform substantially to the cross section of the utters in which they are received. Tliey ave side cheeks 12 which seat in the grooves 5, as indicated, and these side cheeks taper, corresponding with the incline of the s oulders- 6. In this way they are made to present inclined shoulders 13 which seat upon theishoulders 6, as will be readily understood. The butt end of each wedge is rovided with a projecting toe 14 which is a ap'ted to be struck by a hammer or maul in seating the wedge. ()n their lower sides the wedges are provided with channels 15 which are disposed opposite to the channels 7, as indicated in Fig. 5. Although the channels 7, are of plain cylindrical bore, the channels 15 are formed with a lurality of longitudinally disposed inclined (HIGBkS or faces 16 which are rounded at their ends'so that they form a plurality of equidistant cable tends to tighten the wedges in position,
as the force exerted by the cable on the shoulders 17 is in the direction of movement which seats the wedges.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A cable clamp, comprising a block having longitudinal utters formed therein with a partition wal therebetween, the side walls of said gutters havin inclined wedge seats,
said gutters having ottoms disposed ina plane substantiall at right angles to said In testimony whereof I have signed my partition wall and having channels therein name to this specification in the presence of adapted to receive the cable, and wedges havtwo subscribing witnesses. ing inclined shoulders on the sides thereof JOUIS HENRY KNAPP.
5 engaging with said seats and having channels Witnesses:
olpposite said first channels and adapted to MICHEAL E. CASEY, 0 amp the cable therebetween. GRANT M. TAYLOR.
