A. G. LUTZ. METHOD OF MAKING PAPER BOXES.
.No. 521,031. Patented June 5,1894.
of Ohio, have invented a new and useful roller of suitable diameter and length, having UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT o. LU'TZ, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
METHOD OF MAKING PAPE R BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,031, dated June 5, 1894.
Application filed October 12, 1893.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT C, LUTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Cleveland, county of Ouyahoga, and State Method of Making Cylindrical Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new method of making cylindrical paper boxes, having for its object to greatly facilitate and expedite such work, and consists in the means and method employed substantially as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a grooved roller upon which the cylinders are formed. Fig. 2 represents the same having a cylinder formed thereon.
In carrying out my method, I provide a two oppositely located longitudinal grooves A A. Next I take sheets of paper or strawboard B, and insert one edge of a sheet in one of the grooves, bending the paper or board down to form a flange, then rolling the paper or board once around the roller, then I paste or size the balance of the surface of the paper orboard, and then continue to roll the same until the whole sheet has been rolled up, then lay aside the roller with the paper or board thus rolled thereon to dry. When they have become sufficiently driedgl next, with a sharp knife cut a longitudinal slit in the paper cylinder, by carrying the knife along in the groove opposite to the groove having the flanged edge of the paper inserted, with sufficient force to sever the paper cylinder. I
erial No 488,001. (No model.)
next take a strip of cloth or tape G,gumn1ed or pasted and apply the same over the said slit in. the cylinder for the purpose of making a hinge, when this has become sufficiently dried,I next cut a slit along the paper cylinder on the opposite side to the hinge, by carrying the knife in like manner for cutting the other slit, taking care however not-to cut off the flange, but carry the knife along the side of it so as to leave the flange on the edge of the half cylinder. These cylinders I then out into required lengths for boxes, and put heads in ends of these blanks to complete the boxes, which may be finished off in any suitable manner.
Having described my invention, I claim- The method herein described for making paper boxes, which consists first in providing a grooved roller, next inserting the edge of the paper or board in one of the grooves in said roller, then bending down the paper or board, next pasting or sizing the paper and rolling up the balance of paper on the roller, next when dried cutting a slit in the paper cylinder and gumming over the slit a strip of cloth or tape to form a hinge, next cutting slip on the opposite side of the cylinder, then cutting said cylinders into suitable lengths for boxes, and attaching the heads substanpiallg in the manner and for the purpose set ort . ALBERT O. LUTZ.
