COMBINATION PENCIL SHARPENER, GRINDER, PROTECTOR, AND ERASER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,016, dated June 5, 1894.

To all whom. it may concern:

Be it known that I, RICHARD B. CHAMBERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chester, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new Improvement in a Combination Pencil Sharpener, Grinder, Protector, and Eraser, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a pencil sharpener, in which is arranged a longitudinal cutting knife, placed at a suitable angle within a tube, slightly above its base, and having a beveled opening or slot for the escapeof the shavings, and having its opening above the cutting knife, not confined, but left the full size of the tube, the sides of the tube having an oval or other suitably shaped opening on each side, around which is arranged a flexible or other belt of suitable material, having its inner side coated with emery, or its equivalent above which at the end of the tube, a pencil eraser is secured.

My invention has for its object, to provide an efficient device for sharpening pencils, that will be adapted for use with lead pencils and slate pencils, or their equivalent, mounted in wood, or any other material, and by the peculiar construction, to remove the liability of breaking the lead, or other material compos ing the pencil.

I attain the objects of my invention by the mechanism and peculiar construction, illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

Figure 1 is a. front side elevation, taken from the knife side. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing reverse side. Fig. 3 is an open elevation or side view. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the cutting knife tube and the cutting knife.

In Fig. 1, A A represent two guiding spring clips attached to the cutting knife tube B,

and forming a flange or base 0 for the knife tube or chamber B.

D is the longitudinal knife blade, securely fastened at a slightly angular position toward the center of the chamber B. This arrange ment of the cutting knife blade D removes the danger of cutting off or breaking the point of the pencil, and the shaving is planed off straight, and passed out by the beveled Serial No, 502,545. and if too much pressure is brought to bear reduced to the desired degree, the construction of the tube or chamber B, permits of the point being pushed upward to a point at J, Fig. 2, opposite the openings F F, and the flexible belt or sleeve G being compressed and forced in or through the openings F F by the pressure of the operators thumb and finger.
