WITNEEEE El INVENTEIRI A'I'T DRNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL F. MILLIRON, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
HANGER FOR BOOKS OR PAPERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520,856, dated June 5, 1894.
Application filed September 2,1893. Serial No. 484,657. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, SAMUEL F. MILLIRON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hangers for Books or Papers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a hanger for'books, pamphlets, &c., and its object is to providea hanger which may be readily attached to or detached from a book or pamphlet, and it comprises means whereby the back of the book is clamped and held securely to the hanger so that it cannot become loose nor allow the pages of the book to become disconnected.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the hanger. Fig.
2 shows the same attached to a pamphlet; and Fig. 3 is a perspective .view of one of the clamping plates.
The letters, A, A, in the drawings designate the two arms of the hanger which is made preferably of a single piece of wire, the upper end of which is doubled and one part of said doubled portion is bent over the other to form a loop or eye, I), which serves as a means by which the hanger may be hung up or to receive one end of a chain for serving a like purpose; this twisted end also insures a spring action of the two clamping arms of the device, keeping them normally spread. The lower end comprises two clamping arms which depend from the doubled end; the arm, A, has at its end a half loop or hook, c, which engages with the straight end ofthe other arm, A, when the holder is placed in position on a book or pamphlet.
To insure the tight clasping of the book to be suspended and to protect the back and sides thereof, seat plates, d, are provided on the arm, A 5 the ends, 01, of these plates are bent at right angles thereto and each end has a hole or perforation, e, through which the arm, A,- of the holder passes; the body portion of these plates is adapted to seat or rest against the back, f, of the book or pamphlet. Each plate is provided on its side edges with clips or tangs, g, whichmaybe bent at right angles to the body of the plate and adapted to overlap upon the sides or lids of the pamphlet, and while clamping the back and sides thereof and preventing the leaves from becoming disconnected, also prevent sidewise or lateral movement of either the arm, A, or the pamphlet, thus keeping the parts always rigidly in position. One of the arms, A, of the hanger is passed between the leaves of the pamphlet, preferably in the center thereof, and the lower ends of both arms project below the edge of the pamphlet and the hook, c, on one arm engages the other arm.
A chain, B, is attached to the eye, b, of the I hanger by one end and its other end may be secured to a book-case, reading-table or near by a telephone when used to suspend a telephone subscribers book, or to any other suitable place where it is desired to hang the book or pamphlet.
The bending of the doubled upper portion of the hanger into a loop provides a spring action which normally keeps the arms spread apart; thuswhen the hanger is placed in position on a pamphlet, the spring tension will cause them to bind against said pamphlet and hold it firmly and securely.
The hanger may be attached to a suitable object where the pamphlet is to be hung by the chain, B, or the chain may be dispensed with and the hanger secured by its eye, b.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a book or pamphlet hanger, the combination of a seat-plate, d, having a fiat surface to rest against the back of a book or pamphlet, side tangs, g, to clamp the lids of the book, and two right-angularly bent ends each provided with a hole; and a wire hanger provided with two arms, one of which passes through the said holesin the right-angularlv bent ends of the seat-plate and has a hook,c,
at its end to engage the other arm.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
, SAMUEL F. MILLIRON.
